Senator Gianaris Introduces MTA Security Act In The Senate

I have introduced my MTA Security Act (S1968), an important proposal that would protect subway and bus riders. The legislation would grant the State Director of Homeland Security oversight of the security measures utilized by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) at its facilities. The State Department of Homeland Security would examine the security measures being used by the MTA and issue findings and recommendations regarding necessary enhancements. The Director would then be empowered to require the implementation of the recommendations.

Moderating a Panel on Reducing Speeding

On November 19, I moderated a panel entitled “Slower Vehicle Speeds: Healthier New Yorkers” as part of Transportation Alternative’s Stop Speeding Summit, hosted at the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.  The summit brought together elected officials and leaders in the fields of transportation policy, public health, medicine, traffic safety and enforcement to discuss innovative traffic safety measures.  The panel that I moderated focused on the use of hospital and 911 call center data to identify streets and intersections that are most dangerous to pedestrians, as well as efforts to synchronize healthy eating and fitness by providing Summer Play Streets near farmers’ markets.  I look forward to continuing to work closely with other elected officials and transpor

My Take on the Select Bus Service on the East Side

Today we on the East Side, who have been underserved by public transit, have something to celebrate: Select Bus Service along First and Second Avenues in Manhattan. This is a huge first step toward creating a real Bus Rapid Transit alternative to serve the communities far east of the Lexington Avenue subway line.

NYS DOT wastes millions in taxpayer money

Recently the Senate’s Task Force on Government Efficiency, of which I am a member, released an investigative report citing $60 million dollars in potential cost-savings at the NYS Department of Transportation (DOT), and more than $200 million in funds the Department has already wasted. The report is the third in a series of investigations into state agency spending by the Task Force.

Statement from Senator Martin Malavé Dilan

Re: Funding New York’s Road and Bridge Work“There is no reason, cause or justification for withholding funding to the hundreds of road crews and contractors hard at work around the state maintaining our transportation infrastructure.
