With unanimous support from all members present, the New York State Senate passed today a bill that will extend unemployment benefits for New Yorkers who have lost their jobs in the economic downturn.

In recognition of the urgency of the plight many New Yorkers face, the bill will take effect immediately, and all currently unemployed will qualify for an extension of their benefits. The bill also makes it as simple as possible for these New Yorkers to claim their benefits; they can simply continue to file in their weekly phone call or online submission.

Funds for this extension--some $600 million--come from the federal stimulus package, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Go to the New York Senate's Federal Stimulus website for more information on how stimulus funds are helping families and communities across the state.
