Ben Williams, First Place Winner in the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition

BMCC Tribeca PAC, in partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute, proudly presents Monk in Motion: The Next Face of Jazz.  Monk in Motion will feature the top three finalists of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.  Each year, more than $60,000 in scholarships and prizes are awarded to talented young musicians and composers. The competition also focuses on a different instrument every year.  This year’s focus will be the bass and one of the three finalists will be featured at each of the events scheduled throughout the series.

Matt Brewer has been gigging professionally since the age of 12, beginning in his native Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the age of 18, Matt was selected as one of two bassists in the inaugural class of the Juilliard Jazz Program. At the age of 19, he began a five year musical/touring relationship with Greg Osby, with whom he recorded a Blue Note Record entitled Channel Three (trio with Jeff "Tain" Watts). Since then he has toured and/or recorded with such artists as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Greg Osby, Lee Konitz, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Adam Rogers, Terence Blanchard, Aaron Parks, and many others. He currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
