Concert

Our opening night concert will be a tribute to the late Rashied Ali in the spirit of his Ali’s Alley. Performing that evening will be an artist who performed there frequently and on whose next release Rashied Ali drummed – saxophonist Azar Lawrence.

Ali’s Alley (1973-79) Drummer Rashied Ali from the John Coltrane group opened this space on Greene Street in Soho first as Studio 77 before converting it to a bar, restaurant and club renamed Ali’s Alley. Ali’s Alley was noted mainly for free jazz performances where avant garde bands from Europe and Japan were often featured.

The Lost Jazz Shrines series is dedicated to bringing legendary NYC jazz clubs south of 14th street back into the consciousness of the world with a thorough remembrance and celebration.  This year, the series celebrates Ali’s Alley, Jazz Cultural Theatre and Studio Rivbea.  The series will encompass three concerts (Fridays, May 7, May 14 and May 21), each of them preceded by a FREE Humanities Program with live interviews and films that showcase some of the celebrated figures associated with this year’s honorees.
