Senate must pass bill to unlock "Green Jobs" potential

If there are glimmers of recovery in New York’s economic outlook, Buffalonians aren’t seeing them. Approximately 43,700 Buffalo Niagara residents were unemployed in September, many of them among the ranks of the long-term jobless.

But now, some hope! Recently, New York State Assembly members approved “on-bill recovery,” an energy efficiency financing tool that will help create 60,000 new jobs across the state. The Senate now returns to Albany and it must act in a bipartisan fashion to pass this important legislation.

Verizon data center project to benefit from 25 megawatts of low-cost hydropower

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) today announced that that Verizon has been awarded a low-cost hydropower power allocation of 25 megawatts as an incentive to construct a multi-billion dollar data center in the Town of Somerset.

Investigating National Grid's expenditures, rate hike case

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane), Chairman of the New York State Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, today announced that his committee held a successful hearing in Albany today to investigate reports of lavish expenditures and questionable accounting practices at National Grid, which is seeking approval from the Public Service Commission for a $400 million rate hike.

Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee Hearing Information


On October 19, 2010, the Senate Standing Committee on Energy and Telecommunications will hold a public hearing to investigate National Grid’s accounting and expense account practices and its effects on ratepayers. The hearing will take place in Hearing Room A in the Legislative Office Building. An investigation of Public Service Commission records has identified your organization as an interested party in an ongoing Public Service proceeding regarding the rates, charges, rules and regulations of Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation for Electric Service. WNY businesses achieve hydropower contract extensions

At their regular scheduled meeting, the NYPA Trustees approved proposed long-term contract extensions for the continued sale of low-cost hydropower from the Niagara Power Project for businesses representing a broad spectrum of the Niagara Frontier’s most important industries. In doing so, the Trustees authorized submittal of the proposed contracts to Gov. David A. Paterson for his consideration. 

The contract extensions, which run from 2013 to 2020 for nearly all the companies, contain new provisions for maximizing the value of the hydropower for the region’s economy in support of jobs, capital investments and tax revenues.

Energy committee to hold hearing on National Grid accounting scandal

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane), Chairman of the New York State Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, today expressed great concern over news reports about lavish expenditures at National Grid while the electric company is in the middle of seeking approval for a $400 million rate hike in New York.
