Fuel Making Its Way to Our Region

I have some good news about the frustrating gas lines we’re experiencing. I spoke with the Governor’s office of Emergency Management Saturday and fuel is finally making its way on tankers to terminal ports throughout the region.

Many don’t realize that the problem is not solely that gas stations don’t have electricity. That’s part of it, but we’ve made it abundantly clear to LIPA that powering up these stations is vital to the well-being and safety of Long Islanders.

Be Prepared For Hurricane Sandy

Last year it was Irene, now it looks like Hurricane Sandy could be paying us a visit. While Irene caused an incredible $4 billion dollars worth of damage, the National Weather Service says Sandy is actually more powerful and potentially more destructive. Sadly, as of this writing, she’s already claimed 44 lives.

Also, if you have a vulnerable neighbor – a senior or someone with a disability – please be sure to check on them before and after the storm.

Tax Cap Confusion

I am sure you can imagine the phone calls and emails my office took this week as homeowners received their school tax statements. As a pretty seasoned public servant, I can tell you that as sure as the moon raises the tides, taxes raise blood pressures.

This time was no different, except people were asking me, “What happened to the tax cap?” In these cases, they knew their school district had voted to keep the budget at the cap, so they were understandably shocked when they received tax increases of much larger rates.
