SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO ENSURE REPEAT ALCOHOL OFFENDERS FACE APPROPRIATE PENALTIES

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, announced that the committee has approved legislation to ensure that individuals with prior convictions of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated are treated as repeat offenders, regardless of the vehicle type.

Legislation Would Require Judges to Approve Conditional Licenses for Those Arrested for DWI

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the committee has approved legislation to prevent individuals arrested for DWI from obtaining a conditional license without a judge’s approval.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO PROTECT SCHOOL CHILDREN

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the Senate’s Transportation Committee has approved legislation that would better protect school children while riding on buses.

“Individuals who have criminally endangered children’s safety should not be given the responsibility of protecting children on a school bus. Keeping these individuals from getting behind the wheel of a school bus, as well as raising penalties for people who repeatedly pass stopped school buses illegally, is a common sense step to protect children from harm,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES ANTI-DWI LEGISLATION

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the committee has approved several measures to help strengthen the state’s DWI laws.

Senator Fuschillo, who sponsored the anti-DWI measures, said “Drunk drivers endanger innocent lives every time they choose to get behind the wheel. Giving law enforcement greater tools to catch and prosecute drunk drivers will help make our roads safer for everyone.”

The anti-DWI legislation approved by the committee would:

* Require mandatory jail sentences for repeat DWI offenders (S2597).
