Senator Patty Ritchie, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, quizzes First Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Jim Bays on the Governor's Executive Budget proposal, including funding for critical research, education and marketing programs.
Senator Ritchie highlighted the need for funding for apple farmers devastated by recent hurricanes, a proposal to cut funding to the Farm Viability Institute, and property tax relief for farmers.
The hearing took place on Monday, Feb. 4th, and is one of the first steps to enacting an on-time budget before the April 1 deadline.
Senator Patty Ritchie helped open the 2012 Jefferson County Fair on July 10, and got an added surprise when fair President Bob Simpson singled her out for her efforts to untangle a bureaucrat's snafu that threatened a smooth opening.
According to Simpson, Senator Ritchie's intervention saved organizers "thousands of dollars" and helped ensure another successful season for the fair, which is visited by tens of thousands of people from across Northern and Central New York.
