Pols Take Aim at Overtime 'Abuse' in State's Prisons

The state Correctional Services Department could save cash-strapped New York more than $15 million by cutting overtime and reducing other "rampant mismanagement," two state lawmakers charged.

State Sens. Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) and Diane Savino (D-S.I.) cited overtime as the agency's biggest money pit in a report analyzing costs at prisons.

Ten employees split close to $900,000 in OT, the report said.

Records Say Eight Superintendents Living at Luxe, State-Owned Mansions for Low Cost

ALBANY - Prison inmates aren't the only ones getting taxpayer-funded housing.

At least eight prison superintendents are living in the lap of luxury at low cost in state-owned mansions located on or near the prison premises, according to state records.

At least one has a lake view.

The best part for the superintendents, who top out at nearly $145,000 a year, is they pay a pittance for the posh accommodations.

Haiti Relief Benefit at The Bell House

This Wednesday, it was my pleasure to participate in a benefit concert for Haiti relief efforts at the Bell House in Brooklyn. 

The event raised funds for two amazing organizations, Save the Children and Partners in Health that have been providing direct medical care, as well as assisting the most vulnerable victims of this disaster, the children.

Senator Diane Savino's Fight to Stop Express Bus Cuts Featured on NY1

(Staten Island) Senator Savino was out in the cold yesterday, handing out survey cards, asking riders' opinons on the express bus service, as well as collecting petition signatures to stop the MTA's proposed cuts to express bus service in the outerboroughs.With few transportation alternatives already, Staten Island and South Brooklyn cannot afford any reduction in service.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Trusting that the pen is mightier than the budget ax, state Sen. Diane Savino hopes Staten Island's express-bus riders will sign a petition to save their service from the MTA chopping block.

Her office is circulating the petition, along with customer satisfaction surveys, at local express bus stops this week.

Senator Savino Partakes in Holiday Gift Giving at Project Hospitality Dinner

(Staten Island) State Senator Diane Savino and Joseph Fontano, Vice President Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union, local 338, will present Executive Director of Project Hospitality, Terry Troia with two gift cards.  The gift cards of $250 each, one is from King Kullen Supermarkets and the other gift card is for use at A&P Supermarkets.  Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union, local 338 also donated a $500 gift card to Project Hospitality from their members.  Project Hospitality will use these gift cards to purchase food for their annual Christm

If It's Hurricane Season, It Must be December

For the Staten Island Hurricanes, playing in American Youth Football National Championship games — and winning them — is becoming a tradition.

This year, during the first week of December down in sunny Florida, was no different.

The Hurricanes Midget team, in their third year in a row in the National Championship, pulled out an exciting 32-24 overtime shootout victory over the Scottsdale Firebirds to win the title for the second time in three years.
