Senator Zeldin: New Law Protecting Social Security Numbers Takes Effect This Week

Albany, NY- New York State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley), Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, announced that his bill, S.6608-A, which Governor Cuomo recently signed into law, takes effect this week.

The new law is designed to protect consumers from identity theft by making it illegal for individuals or businesses to request your Social Security Number (SSN) except for certain circumstances.

The Federal Trade Commission, Social Security Administration, General Accounting Office and others acknowledge that the widespread public exposure of personal information, especially SSNs, plays a significant role in identity theft.

Senator Zeldin and NY Senate Consumer Protection Committee Hold Second Hearing on Organized Retail Crime

Central Islip, N.Y. – State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I-Shirley), Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, held his second hearing to investigate circumstances surrounding Organized Retail Crime (ORC) this past Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at the Touro Law Center in Central Islip.

The focus of the hearing was to examine methods employed by the retail industry to combat ORC and to identify solutions to better address this growing criminal enterprise throughout New York State and around the Nation.

New York State Senate Passes Legislative Package To Crack Down on Organized Retail Crime

State Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley), Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, announced Senate passage today of his legislative bill package designed to crack down on Organized Retail Crime (ORC).

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, organized retail theft is an industry that costs United States retailers about $30 billion per year. Supermarket losses account for $15 billion of that annual theft. Additionally, state and local governments are losing out on tens of millions of dollars annually in lost sales tax and excise fee revenue.

SENATE GIVES FINAL PASSAGE TO BILL PROTECTING CONSUMERS FROM INTRUSIVE TELEMARKETERS

The New York State Senate today gave final legislative passage to a bill that protects New Yorkers from intrusive or unwanted telemarketing practices. The bill (S7567A), sponsored by Senator Lee Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley), regulates all telemarketers who do business in New York, wherever they may be located, and adds new consumer protections from unwelcome prerecorded calls, known as robocalls, from telemarketers.

“This legislation finally gives consumers the protections needed from unwanted telemarketers,” said Senator Zeldin, Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee. “By allowing individuals the ability to opt-out and by strengthening the state's registry for telemarketers, we will be reducing the flood of calls to protect New Yorkers."

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, organized retail theft is an industry that costs United States retailers about $30 billion per year. Supermarket losses account for $15 billion of that annual theft. Additionally state and local governments are losing out on tens of millions of dollars annually in lost sales tax and excise fee revenue.

Last week, the Consumer Protection Committee, passed a package of six bills (S.6954-A, S.6955-A, S.6956, S.6957-A, S.6958-B and S6959-A) designed to crack down on ORC. The legislation now awaits final senate approval.
