Senator Venditto Alerts Consumers to Potential Risks Following BlueCross BlueShield insurer Anthem Data Breach

Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, State Senator Michael Venditto, (R, C, I- Massapequa), alerted consumers today of potential risks following Anthem’s data breach.

BlueCross BlueShield insurer Anthem reported that personal records of a number of their customers had been compromised during a very sophisticated external cyber attack. According to the company, the attack allowed the hackers to gain access to personally identifiable information including names, addresses, birthdates and social security numbers which could make those affected vulnerable to identity theft.

Senator Venditto Comments on Protecting Children from Identity Theft

Recently as Consumer Protection Chairman, Senator Venditto voted on a bill that amends a law that was passed last year. This law protects children from identity thieves who steal information to establish fraudulent financial accounts. As Consumer Protection Chairman Senator Venditto will continue to sponsor more good helpful pieces of legislation, like this one that protect and give opportunity to the future generations of New Yorkers.

Senator Venditto Selected to Chair Committee on Consumer Protection

Albany, NY-New York State Senator Michael Venditto (R, C, I- Massapequa), announced today that he has been selected to Chair the Senate Standing Committee on Consumer Protection.

“It’s an honor to be appointed to chair the Senate Committee on Consumer Protection. As Chairman this will give me a unique opportunity to be forceful advocate for not only the rights of consumers in the 8th Senate District, but all of New York,” said Senator Venditto.

“In this ever-changing economical climate, our committee will work hard to deliver real results to consumers, especially those consumers and constituents throughout the 8th Senate District and the Long Island- Metro region who are still rebuilding from Super-Storm Sandy,” continued Senator Venditto.

Outgoing Third District Senator Zeldin Announces Signing of Bill to Protect our Children

New Law Protects Children from Identity Theft

ALBANY—Outgoing Third District State Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I—Shirley), Chair of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, announced today that his bill aimed at protecting minors from identity theft has been signed into law.

The bill, S. 6682, creates a mechanism whereby parents or guardians can place a freeze on the credit record of a minor in order to prevent their child from becoming a victim of identity theft.
