Joint statement from Senator Maziarz and IBEW Local 97 President Ted Skerpon on transmission system upgrades

Starting with the New York State Transmission and Reliability Study (STARS) that identified significant bottlenecks in our transmission infrastructure back in 2010, policymakers and the public alike have become very aware of the significant and persistent problems that an aging and inefficient transmission system has created.  Make no mistake—these negative consequences affect each and every New Yorker.

Power line upgrades must move forward, Senator Maziarz says

People use electricity in their homes and businesses every day and, since electrical power has been available to most of us for our entire lives, we also tend to take it for granted. Most people only think about the energy that powers their home once a month when they pay their utility bills, and in that case their typical question is, “why is my bill so high?”

Yes, Governor Cuomo, let's end the 18-a utility tax ASAP

Statement from Senator George Maziarz:  "Putting an end to the 18-a utility surcharge cannot come quickly enough.  I have been banging this drum louder than anyone else since 2009 when this tax was foolishly created to support bloated state spending.

Maziarz bill to audit relicensing beneficiaries becomes law

Governor Cuomo has signed into law Senate Bill 4948A, which directs the New York Power Authority to conduct audits of entities that receive power allocations or monetary payments associated with the federal relicensing agreement.  All beneficiaries of power or money associate with these agreements are required to fully cooperate and once the audit is complete, NYPA is then required to report their finding to the Governor and Legislature.

PSC puts Maziarz bill into practice

On May 29, 2013 the Senate passed legislation, sponsored by Senator Maziarz, that exempts electric car charging stations from being regulated as an electric corporation by the PSC. This legislation however was not passed by the Assembly. Last week, the PSC announced that it does not have jurisdiction over these publicly available stations, putting into practice the previously passed Senate legislation.

Senator Maziarz promotes liquefied natural gas facilities in New York

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane), Chairman of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee applauded last week’s action by the Department of Environmental Conservation in proposing regulations to allow for the construction and operation of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities under permit from the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Senate Energy Committee holds hearing in New York City regarding Indian Point

Yesterday morning the New York State Senate Committee on Energy and Telecommunications held a public hearing in New York City to discuss the Indian Point Contingency Plan being conducted by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC). The hearing examined the impacts of potential outcomes on the state’s environment and particularly air quality, as well as ratepayer costs, reliability and competitive markets..
