Senator Martins Discusses Important Legislation on 'Your Voice'

On the latest edition of "Your Voice" from Albany, Senator Jack M. Martins discussed important legislation such as property tax relief for seniors and middle class families and combating prescription drug abuse, the Seventh Senate District Woman of Distinction, NYC Police Detective Kevin Brennan of Garden City Park, a visit from the students of the Hampton Street School and upcoming community events.

Legislation Introduced by Senator Martins to Aid Villages Signed Into Law

Law makes it legal for villages to use the state appraisal services that are already available to counties, cities and towns

Senator Jack M. Martins announced that legislation he sponsored (S.6307A) to allow villages to acquire the same state appraisal services as counties, cities and towns when making assessments of highly complex properties and public utilities was signed into law by Governor Cuomo.

The Triple-Crown of Tax Relief

There certainly must have been a lot of disappointment in the days leading up to the Belmont Stakes as thoroughbred racehorse and Triple-Crown favorite, “I’ll Have Another,” showed signs of tendonitis and was scratched. I imagine it must have wreaked a fair amount of havoc on the sport, but I think most notable was the widespread, collective let-down that people experienced. Maybe we fall victim to so much press hype but I think it has something more to do with human nature. People love a winner, especially one that overcomes the odds, indisputably, three times over.

Senate Passes Bill to Honor Fallen Firefighters

Legislation Also Passed that Allows Volunteer Firefighters to be Absent from Work During States of Emergency

The Senate apassed a bill (S.6368A) that would allow members of volunteer fire departments and volunteer ambulance squads to take an authorized absence from work when they respond to a state of emergency.

Senator Jack M. Martins strongly supported the bill. “Our firefighters and emergency personnel are always to respond it times of emergency. They should have the security to know that their jobs will be protected when they are serving to protect their communities in times when there is a state of emergency,” he said.

Senator Martins and Assemblywoman Schimel Participate in League of Women Voters Forum

The League of Women Voters of Nassau County held a forum at the Port Washington Library with New York State Senator Jack M. Martins and Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel recently. The League extended an invitation to both legislators who were happy to hold the forum during which members of the League and the public were invited to ask any questions they chose.

The members of the League and the public asked numerous questions on many important issues related to state and local government. Issues addressed included LIPA’s response to power outages, property taxes, hydro-fracking, gambling and local issues. Upon completion of the forum, the two lawmakers received an ovation.

Senator Jack M. Martins was honored by the Met Council during its 36th Annual Legislative Breakfast on Sunday, June 3 with the State Legislative Leadership Award.

Each year, Met Council aids, sustains and empowers 100,000 New Yorkers in need. Met Council is a Jewish organization that serves everyone, fighting poverty through comprehensive social services that treat every individual with dignity and respect.

Senate Votes to Restore STAR Rebate Checks

Senator Martins Co-Sponsors Bill

Senator Jack M. Martins co-sponsored a bill (S.7447) to restore the STAR property tax rebate check program. The bill would provide $202 million in property tax relief to senior citizens in the 2012-13 school year and $1.2 billion in property tax relief to middle class families starting in 2013-14.

Senator Martins Congratulates Port Washington's Newest Eagle Scout

Andrew Diffley reached the highest rank a Scout can achieve when he became Port Washington Troop 241’s newest Eagle Scout during an Eagle Court of Honor held on his behalf on Saturday, June 2 at the Flower Hill Hose Company.

Among the elected officials to attend the ceremony were Senator Jack M. Martins and North Hempstead Town Clerk Leslie Gross.

Senate Majority Passes Bill to Eliminate MTA Payroll Tax for All Libraries

Senate Continues Assault on Onerous Tax to Help Taxpayers

Senator Jack M. Martins and the members of the Senate scored another victory for taxpayers by passing a bill to eliminate the MTA Payroll Tax for all libraries in New York State.

Senator Martins vowed to fight to eliminate the MTA Payroll Tax, which was passed in 2009 by the former Senate Majority and former Governor, and has been successful in working with his colleagues and Governor Cuomo in getting the tax eliminated for all small businesses with payrolls of less than $1.25 million and schools, both public and private.

Senator Martins’ bill (S-6079A), which passed the Senate on Monday, June 5, eliminates the tax for all libraries.
