Senator Martins Seeks to Honor Fallen Officers

One bill (S4682) names the Jericho Turnpike bridge overpass that crosses over the Cross Island Parkway in Bellerose as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge." 

Officer Lopez had served with the Nassau County Police Department for eight years and was assigned to the Emergency Services Unit, one of the department's most elite units after only five years of service. During his time on the force, Officer Lopez earned six meritorious service awards, three excellent police duty awards and several other command recognitions.

Senator Martins Bill Naming Bridge After Officer Joseph Olivieri Passes Senate

After passing a bill to name a bridge overpass in Bellerose after Nassau County Police Officer Arthur Lopez, Senator Jack M. Martins was successful in passing his bill to rename the bridge overpass on New Hyde Park Road, which crosses over the Long Island Expressway, in honor of another brave officer, Joseph P. Olivieri Jr.

A former NYPD officer and a 15-year-veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, Officer Olivieri, as a member of the Nassau County Police Department's Highway Patrol, was investigating a traffic accident near exit 35 on the LIE, involving an intoxicated driver, when he was tragically struck and killed by another motorist.

Senator Martins Passes Bill to Name Bridge After Officer Lopez

State Senator Jack M. Martins paid homage to a fallen New York City Police officer who was killed in the line of duty by passing a bill to name the Jericho Turnpike bridge overpass, crossing over the Cross Island Parkway in Bellerose, as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge." 

Officer Lopez had served with the Nassau County Police Department for eight years and was assigned to the Emergency Services Unit, one of the department's most elite units after only five years of service. Senator Martins Joins Great Neck School in Celebrating School Lunch Superhero Day

The Great Neck School District celebrated School Lunch Superhero Day as Senator Jack M. Martins and Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel joined with Great Neck School District Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance John Powell and Great Neck Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Dolan in recognizing school nutrition professionals across the nation. Great Neck has an excellent one in Patricia Daley-Jimenez.

Senator Martins Participates in Community Readers Program at South Salem School

State Senator Jack M. Martins made a special guest appearance at the South Salem Elementary School in Port Washington on an early Friday morning to read with the students. Senator Martins read "Duck For President" by Doreen Cronin as part of the communtiy readers program, which encourages community leaders to become involved in education by encouraging children to read. 

Senator Martins was honored to have spent the morning with the children by taking part in such a valuable program.

Senator Martins Presents Senior Citizen Awards to Local Residents for Volunteerism

The Seventh Senate District is blessed to have an active senior population that has not only built the communities into what they but also still make invaluable contributions to improving the lives of others. To recognize such contributions, Senator Martins honored two residents from the Seventh Senate District during New York State Senior Citizens Day. The honorees were Fred Harber of Great Neck and Walter Wientge, Jr. of New Hyde Park.

"Fred and Walter exemplify the spirit of volunteerism. They are constantly thinking of others as they demonstrate that we can all make a difference," Senator Martins said. "They are both an inspiration to all generations."

State Senator Jack M. Martins discussed additional funding coming to the Seventh Senate District on "Your Voice" from Albany. Through the budget, there were more resources allocated to local governments and school districts. Senator Martins discusses the benefits.
