Statement by Senator Craig M. Johnson, (D-Nassau), the Senate Majority's Representative to the MTA Capital Program Review Board:

“In light of Acting Commissioner Gee's veto of the proposed 2010-2014 Capital Plan, I strongly recommend the MTA reassess its capital needs and present a better, balanced, and more responsible plan to the CPRB.  
A capital plan is important to our region -- not only to strengthen our mass transit infrastructure, but also because it would create construction jobs in a sector that is currently experiencing massive unemployment.

AmNew York: State grills MTA on plan for technology, system improvements

 

The honeymoon is over for the MTA’s new chief.

State senators grilled MTA CEO Jay Walder Thursday about his plans to modernize the transit system, indicating that the state might not shell out for nifty gizmos like countdown clocks in bus shelters.

“We’ve lived for years without the clocks,” said state Sen. Craig Johnson, (D-Port Washington), during the hearing in Manhattan. “I just don’t see how we can justify that right now.”

A key state senator threw cold water on the MTA's "extremely ambitious" capital plan, including a project to place arrival countdown clocks at bus stops.

Sen. Craig Johnson told a Senate hearing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority shouldn't expect the Legislature to fill the $10 billion gap in its five-year plan.

Budget may derail LIRR plan for second track

A plan to add a second track between the Long Island Rail Road's Farmingdale andRonkonkoma stations may be on the chopping block if the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is forced to scale back its proposed $28-billion capital plan, the LIRR's president said Thursday.
