IS OUR DEMOCRATIC VISION OF PUBLIC EDUCATION BEING FULFILLED?
A DECADE LATER: A LOOK AT THE GROWING CHARTER SCHOOL INDUSTRY
Subject and Purpose: Ten years after the establishment of the first charter school in New York, the Senate Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions Committee will hold a hearing regarding the role of corporations and other entities that have contractual relationships with charter schools in the State of New York.
The purpose of this hearing is to examine the business of charter schools by reviewing their development as a privatized solution to public education. Towards this end, we will hear from parents, educators, legislators, elected officials, advocates, charter operators, and other relevant authorities at the city and state level.
The fundamental question is whether the charter industry is fulfilling our democratic vision of best practices, transparency & accountability, and most importantly—achieving the best educational outcomes for our children and revitalizing our public school system.
