Purpose

Dear Friends,

This year, Beach Cleanup 2012 is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10:00 AM until Noon. In case of severe weather conditions, the rain date is Sunday, September 16, 2012. I hope that you will be able to participate so that we can make Beach Cleanup 2012 another big success!

The data we collect is compiled by the American Littoral Society and sent to the Ocean conservancy in Washington, D.C., where it is analyzed and compared with data from around the world. The information is used to develop national and international programs and policies to control debris so that our beaches will remain clean and safe. It is also used by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to evaluate the effectiveness of existing laws and programs to prevent debris from washing up in the first place.

The Long Island Beach Buggy Association and the Long Island State Park Region will cosponsor the event. In addition, numerous conservation organizations, sportsmen’s groups, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops from our area are expected to participate.

This year at the Beach Cleanup, I will be collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to the local food banks. Please consider bringing along an item or two so that we can replenish the badly depleted food supplies in our local food pantries.

I encourage you to
type your information into the Volunteer Service Form attached below before printing it out.  Bring the completed form with you on Beach Cleanup Day.  Advance registration is not required, however, with a completed Volunteer Service Form in hand upon your arrival, registration will be quick and easy.

Don’t forget to wear gloves, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. To those who have participated in the past, I look forward to seeing you again. I also hope to meet many new volunteers this year.  If you have any questions about Beach Cleanup Day, please contact my office at (631) 669-9200.

With best personal regards, I remain

Very truly yours,

Senator Owen H. Johnson
