Senior Scam Prevention Forum In Conjunction With The NYS Department of State
To educate seniors about the increasingly common issue of scamming, Senator Boyle will be hosting a Senior Scam Prevention Forum in conjunction with the NYS Department of State to inform seniors about the danger of scams and ways in which they can be prevented. The Department Division of Consumer Protection will deliver a presentation about ways to avoid becoming the victim of a scam. According to the FBI, con artists are attracted to senior citizens because they have a “nest egg” – they tend to own their home, and/or to have excellent credit.
The event will take place on Thursday, July 18, 2013 from 1 pm – 3 pm at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home at 111 Beach Drive in West Islip.
The Suffolk County Office for the Aging will have a table outside the event and will be distributing information to constituents.
Senior scam crime is a serious issue in today’s society. According to ABC News, the Federal Trade Commission said that complaints of "impostor scams" have been growing for several years and was the sixth most frequent FTC complaint in 2010, breaking into the top-10 list for the first time.
Senator Boyle encourages you attend this event to learn about the different types of scams and to protect yourself and your loved ones from becoming a victim of this crime. If you are interested in attending this event, please RSVP at Senator Boyle’s District Office at (631) 665-2311.
