Purpose

With heart disease being the number one cause of death in the U.S., Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola) and St. Francis Hospital are teaming up to help residents be safe and get screened.

Senator Martins has arranged to bring St. Francis’ Community Mobile Outreach Van to the Herricks Community Center (999 Herricks Road, New Hyde Park) to provide free cardiovascular screenings. The screening program will take place on Thursday, September 4th from 10 am to 2 pm.

According to St. Francis Hospital, screenings will include a brief cardiac history, blood pressure check, and a simple blood test for cholesterol and diabetes. Participants will also receive information about steps they can take to reduce their risk of heart disease. Anyone age 18 and over is welcome to participate. Residents will be screened on a first come, first served basis; no pre-registration or appointment is necessary.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for American men and women. It is also the leading cause of death among nearly all ethnic groups. One in every four deaths in the U.S. is due to Heart Disease.

For more information about the free heart health screening program on Thursday, September 4th, please call Senator Martins’ Office at 516-746-5924.
