Hundreds of free screenings completed at Family Health Fair

Amherst, N.Y.- Hundreds of free health screenings were conducted at Senator Ranzenhofer's Family Health Fair:

Around 250 residents participated in a glucose test and cholesterol screening
85 residents were screened for skin cancer  
78 PSA tests were given
85 bone density heel scans were completed 
145 retina scans were conducted

Senator Stavisky, Congresswoman Meng, Councilwoman Koslowitz Speak Out to Save Community Garden

Elmhurst, NY—Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing), Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-Queens) and Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz (D-Forest Hills) gathered at the Elmhurst Community Garden today to call for a delay of the property sale so that community members have an opportunity to conserve or relocate the garden, which is located on private property.

Summary of 2013 Senate Legislative Action

 

2013-2014 NEW YORK STATE BUDGET

 

The New York State Senate approved the 2013-14 state budget that delivers on priorities outlined by the Senate Republican Conference to provide much-needed tax relief for middle-class families, help businesses create jobs, and, for the third consecutive year, the budget keeps spending growth below two percent, which is consistent with the local spending cap that applies to school districts and local governments.  It was also the third consecutive budget approved prior to the April 1 deadline.

SENATE PASSES ADAMS BILL TO PREVENT FINANCIAL CRIMES AGAINST BROOKLYN’S SENIORS

Bill would provide elderly with fraud safety net, create alert system to ID and prosecute schemes against seniors

(Brooklyn, NY – June 13, 2013) – The New York State Senate passed Senator Eric Adams’s bill (S. 5707) to prevent financial crimes against seniors Wednesday night, bringing Brooklyn one step closer to greatly improved fraud protections for its older population.

The bill would provide elderly consumers with a safety net when they are victimized, create an alert system so that evidence of fraud can be reported directly to law enforcement, and engage banks to identify and prevent financial schemes.

Senate Approves Senator Kennedy’s Bill to Crackdown on Financial Exploitation of Seniors

Legislation would expand the crime of larceny to more harshly prosecute people who commit financial abuse of seniors or individuals with disabilities.

Kennedy believes bill would help ensure stiffer penalties in cases like that of Kenneth Hetizenrater, who exploited the trust of a 90-year-old man to steal $550,000 from him.

Senator Jeff Klein Joins City Island’s Pilot Cove Manor Residents to Commemorate Arrival of New Senior Van

CITY ISLAND, NY – This afternoon, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined Pilot Cove Manor Residents and community leaders to commemorate the arrival of a new senior van for Pilot Cove Manor nursing facility, home to over 100 seniors.

Senator Klein said, “I am proud that working with the NYS Department of Transportation and Ms. Gallagher, we were able to replace Pilot Cove Manor’s previous van – a van that had been in use for over twenty years. This senior van provides a critical service to the seniors here at Pilot Cove and I am pleased that I was able to make sure that City Island’s seniors are transported safely and soundly.”

ALBANY, N.Y. – Tens of thousands of children in New York being raised by aunts, uncles and adult siblings when their own parents have stepped out of the picture could get a better footing in life under a bill working its way through the New York State Legislature.

 

The “Relative Caregiver Bill” (S2094A/A7189A), sponsored by Senator Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WF-Queens), would give these relatives the same rights as grandparents when raising children whose own parents are unable to do so.
