CALLING ALL SENIORS: RITCHIE ANNOUNCES HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIRS

First Event to Take Place September 11th at Watertown Fairgrounds Arena

State Senator Patty Ritchie will offer area seniors tips for living healthy, active lifestyles at her annual Jefferson County Senior Health and Wellness Fair, taking place at the Watertown Fairgrounds Arena on September 11, 2013.

The free event—which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.—will feature dozens of local organizations as well as lunch and entertainment by the Country Stompers, both sponsored by Senator Ritchie.

“I am thrilled to once again be able to host this annual event, which is something that area seniors truly look forward to,” said Senator Ritchie.   

“Whether you want to check your blood pressure, find new ways to improve your diet, get a flu shot or learn about local organizations that can help improve your well-being, this event is a one stop shop for learning how to get and stay healthy.”

Last year, nearly 2,000 seniors attended Senator Ritchie’s Health and Wellness Fairs held in Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence Counties.

Senator Stewart-Cousins' Visit to Ludington Adult Day Services

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins visited the Sound Shore Medical Center on Wednesday, August 14th to receive a skirt made especially for her by Mr. Edrick Forde, a former tailor who will be celebrating his 106th birthday on September 11th. In a quote after the visit, Senator Stewart-Cousins commented, “I am incredibly thankful to Mr. Forde for the beautiful skirt. He is still as talented a tailor as he ever was, and I am so thrilled to know him. Adult day services, like those offered to Mr. Forde by Ludington Adult Day Services, are critically important because they provide senior citizens with opportunities to stay active and engaged in any number of activities.

Hundreds of free screenings completed at Family Health Fair

Amherst, N.Y.- Hundreds of free health screenings were conducted at Senator Ranzenhofer's Family Health Fair:

Around 250 residents participated in a glucose test and cholesterol screening
85 residents were screened for skin cancer  
78 PSA tests were given
85 bone density heel scans were completed 
145 retina scans were conducted

Summary of 2013 Senate Legislative Action

 

2013-2014 NEW YORK STATE BUDGET

 

The New York State Senate approved the 2013-14 state budget that delivers on priorities outlined by the Senate Republican Conference to provide much-needed tax relief for middle-class families, help businesses create jobs, and, for the third consecutive year, the budget keeps spending growth below two percent, which is consistent with the local spending cap that applies to school districts and local governments.  It was also the third consecutive budget approved prior to the April 1 deadline.

SENATE PASSES ADAMS BILL TO PREVENT FINANCIAL CRIMES AGAINST BROOKLYN’S SENIORS

Bill would provide elderly with fraud safety net, create alert system to ID and prosecute schemes against seniors

(Brooklyn, NY – June 13, 2013) – The New York State Senate passed Senator Eric Adams’s bill (S. 5707) to prevent financial crimes against seniors Wednesday night, bringing Brooklyn one step closer to greatly improved fraud protections for its older population.

The bill would provide elderly consumers with a safety net when they are victimized, create an alert system so that evidence of fraud can be reported directly to law enforcement, and engage banks to identify and prevent financial schemes.
