Padavan and Local Residents Celebrate 35th Anniversary of Queens County Farm Museum at Annual Queens County Fair

New York State Senator (Queens) joined thousands over the weekend at the 28th Annual Queens County Fair at the Queens County Farm Museum in Floral Park. This year the Queens County Farm Museum celebrates their 35th anniversary. Since its foundation, Senator Padavan has been a driving force behind the legislative and community efforts to protect and preserve the Queens County Farm Museum.  The annual fair provides an opportunity for families and residents from Queens and the surrounding areas to enjoy a traditional agricultural fair and learn more about the rich history of New York’s oldest continuously operating farmSenator Padavan with traditional German singers and dancers at the Queens County Fair on Sunday September 26, 2010.

Senator Maziarz visits North Tonawanda History Museum

New York State Senator George Maziarz and Robert C. Rand toured the North Tonawanda History Museum recently.  Senator Maziarz called the first interest group meeting on September 10, 2003, to kick off plans to create the history museum.  Members of the Rand family, proud of their family's roots in North Tonawanda and the contributions their ancestors made to North Tonawanda and the world, have been supportive of the history museum effort from the beginning.  Robert Rand visits the History Museum frequently.  Here, Senator Maziarz and Robert Rand join Executive Director Donna Zellner Neal in front of a Wurlitzer Model 1400 jukebox manufactured in 1951 and donated to the History Museum by member George Trautman.

Senator Foley Secures Funding for Long Island Maritime Museum

Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) announced today that he has secured funding for the Long Island Maritime Museum.

The $125,000 capital grant that Senator Foley provided, which will be administered through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), will be used to make various improvements at the facility, including the expansion and renewal of the museum’s collections.

Senator Foley Secures Funding for Greater Patchogue Foundation

Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) announced today that he has secured funding for the Greater Patchogue Foundation.

The $100,000 capital grant that Senator Foley provided, which will be administered through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), will be used to make improvements to the sidewalks and curbing around the Lakeview Cemetery. The completion of improvements to the sidewalks will compliment the newly reconstructed front entrance gates, archway and gate pillars that replicate those first constructed in 1899.

Padavan Marks 50th Anniversary of St. Mel School in Flushing

New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) joined with school administrators, faculty, parents, students and alumni of St. Mel School in Flushing to commemorate their landmark 50th Anniversary on Saturday September 18, 2010. The anniversary was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony and the opening of a time capsule. St. Mel Church Pastor Father Christopher J. Turczany, Sister Angela Gannon, Laura Conte and Senator Frank Padavan prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the second fifty years of St. Mel School.

Senator Foley, Mayor Pate Announce Funding for Bellport Village

Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) and Bellport Village Mayor David Pate announced today that Bellport Village will receive $450,000 in capital money from the State of New York.

The funding, secured by Senator Foley, will be used to fund projects in Bellport Village. A total of $300,000 in multi-modal funding will go towards re-vamping the sidewalks in the village and $125,000 in funding from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York will go towards restoring the Bellport Village Community Center.

Savino and Klein Announce Restoration of NYS Italian Regents High School Exam

Protects Study of Italian Language in Schools

TUCKAHOE, NY – State Senator Diane Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn), State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), and representatives from the Westchester Italian Cultural Center and the Sons of Italy announced the restoration of the NYS Italian Regents high school exam at a rally on Thursday. Last week the NYS Senate saved the exam from extinction when it passed the final piece of this year’s budget. Attendees rallied in support of this important achievement and to celebrate Italian culture.

Harlem African Burial Ground Task Force Update!

After the Joint Senate Hearing on the Elmendorf Reformed Church (EFC) African Burial Ground on March 19th, the office of Senator José M. Serrano and the rest of the Colonial African Burial Ground Task Force, co-chaired by Reverend Patricia Singletary and Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito, have been meeting regularly to work toward the reclaiming, preserving, and official recognition of the burial ground. As the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is considering redeveloping the site in question, the area requires a series of environmental reviews, including an assessment of known and potential cultural resources.

STACHOWSKI CALLS FOR HARSHER PUNISHMENT FOR VETERANS’ CEMETERY DESECRATION

      The State Senate has today passed legislation (S.8289) sponsored by Senator William T. Stachowski (D, Lake View) that would create a new crime for cemetery desecration of a veteran cemetery plot, grave or burial place.  The measure would also prohibit anyone from selling veteran commemorative cemetery markers, flag holders, monuments, statues or other physical memorabilia that are over 75 years old if those items are already placed or located within a cemetery.
