Markowitz, Squadron: City Should Take This 'Two-for-One' Opportunity, Bring Game-Changing Center for Urban Science & Progress to Downtown Brooklyn

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN – Today, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and State Senator Daniel Squadron joined Brooklyn elected officials and community and business leaders to rally in support of New York University’s and the Polytechnic Institute’s proposal for an applied sciences campus at 370 Jay Street.

Putting the long-empty former MTA headquarters at 370 Jay Street to use would be a game-changer for Downtown Brooklyn -- creating a hub for science and technology that connects the budding tech community in DUMBO and the surrounding neighborhoods with NYU-Poly’s proposed Center for Urban Science and Progress, as well as City Tech and Poly’s existing campuses. Elected officials and the community have long called for 370 Jay Street to be put to productive use, and pursuing this proposal would be a major step forward in the continued resurgence of Downtown Brooklyn.

In Nassau County, Governor Signs Legislation to Cut Taxes For More Than 700,000 Small Businesses and Self-Employed New Yorkers 

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today traveled to West Hempstead, Nassau County, to sign a new law that will reduce the MTA payroll tax, providing relief for more than 290,000 small businesses and more than 410,000 self-employed New Yorkers. The tax reduction is part of the Governor's comprehensive plan, passed by the legislature last week, to create jobs and cut taxes for middle class New Yorkers, and revitalize the state's economy. 

Comprehensive legislation designed to spur New York’s economy and invest in the future passes Senate and Assembly

Albany—State Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Brooklyn) announced that the Senate and Assembly has passed legislation that will help kick start a sluggish economy by providing modest tax relief to the middle class along with financial assistance to victims of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) today applauded Governor Cuomo’s comprehensive Job Creation package, which includes significant reductions in the MTA Payroll Tax and state flood relief assistance for individuals, small businesses, and local governments hard hit by recent flood disasters.

Senator Oppenheimer stated, “The MTA Payroll Tax needs to be eliminated for suburban counties. The $250 million cut in the payroll tax, which is targeted to small businesses, self-employed individuals and private and parochial schools, will be of special benefit to Westchester.”

Bill Cuts Taxes for 4.4 Million New Yorkers; Repeals MTA Payroll Tax for Most Businesses; Reduces Taxes on Manufacturers; Invests in Job Creation & Retention

(12/07/11) - The New York State Senate today passed the Middle Class Tax Cut and Job Creation Plan that will reduce taxes for millions of hardworking, middle-class taxpayers to their lowest levels in more than half a century. In addition, the comprehensive plan will help strengthen our economy and create new jobs by eliminating the job-killing MTA payroll tax for more than 78 percent of the small employers that pay the tax. The plan will provide a total of more than $3.3 billion in tax relief to individuals and businesses.

BREWSTER — 12/7/2011– After years of leading the charge to repeal the MTA payroll tax, I am thrilled with the governor’s plan. With that being said, I will continue with my demands for forensic accounting to protect blue collar families like mine who are struggling. This tax cut for the middle class is exactly the shot in the arm working families need and is a great jobs focused package that begins to adjust our unfair tax code, while eliminating the job killing MTA payroll tax for the vast majority of payers. Now more than ever we must remain focused on job creation and push even harder moving into 2012 to alleviate the tax burden for working families, seniors and small business owners. This is a great first step towards that goal!
