Department of Financial Services to Speek Resolution of Insurance Claims in Areas Affected by SANDY

The NYS Department of Financial Services (DFS) is setting new rules to speed the processing of insurance claims in areas affected by Storm Sandy. The new regulation reduces the amount of time an insurer can delay its decision on a claim, and requires insurers to report to the Department on how many claims it is delaying and the reasons for the delays.

Governor Cuomo Outlines 2013-2014 Executive Budget to Maintain Fiscal Responsibility and Continue to Invest in Economic Growth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo unveiled the proposed 2013-14Executive Budget and Management Plan that builds on two years of balanced, fiscally responsible budgeting and invests in economic development, education reform, rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy, provides support to local governments and school districts, and includes no new taxes or fees.

Highlights of the Executive Budget:

· Eliminates $1.3 billion budget gap with no new taxes or fees. The expected gap for 2013-14 was projected to be $17.4 billion prior to the last two responsible budgets.

· Holds spending increases below 2 percent for third consecutive year.

Intern for Senator Martins Raises Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness

Mineola High School Senior Eric Timlin, an intern at the District Office of State Senator Jack M. Martins, wanted his senior project to be something that would benefit his classmates and the community as a whole. Timlin decided to organize an assembly at Mineola High School about a problem that has come to light in recent years – the prescription drug abuse epidemic.

Recently, the New York State Senate added a powerful tool to combat the epidemic through a new law, entitled I-STOP, that was co-sponsored by Senator Martins. The legislation, which was signed into law by Governor Cuomo, creates an online database accessible to doctors and pharmacists who will be able to identify who is getting excessive prescriptions of narcotics.

September 29th 'National Prescription Drug Take Back Day' follows up New York's new I-STOP Law in fight against prescription drug abuse

Elmira, N.Y., September 28—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that Saturday, September 29, 2012 is "National Prescription Drug Take Back Day" and law enforcement agencies across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions will operate drop-off centers for people to anonymously dispose of their unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

“It’s incredibly important that our law enforcement leaders are taking part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  Their ongoing leadership in this overall effort to combat the alarming rise of prescription drug abuse will make all the difference,” said O’Mara.

Bring your unwanted prescription drugs to a Shed The Meds program sponsored by Senator Owen H. Johnson on October 20, 2012, from 10:00 AM until Noon at the West Islip Public Library Parking Lot, 3 Higbie Lane in West Islip.  Drive up and drop off any expired or no longer used prescription medications.  They will be safely disposed of by the Suffolk County Police Department who will be on hand for the collection.“We’ve all heard too many stories about prescription drugs being used improperly and even illegally,” Senator Johnson said.  “By collecting and properly disposing of household drugs, we can help to keep them out of the wrong hands.  Doing so also keeps harmful materials from being disposed of improperly and potentially damaging our water supply.”

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R – Merrick) announced that legislation he cosponsored to help combat prescription drug abuse has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The new “I-STOP” law will significantly improve the way prescription drugs are prescribed and monitored in New York State.

     “Prescription drug abuse is a growing epidemic which has already led to tragedy here on Long Island. Stronger measures are needed to prevent drug abusers from gaming the system. Three years after the Advance highlighted a deadly abuse epidemic that has killed more people on Staten Island than car crashes or murder, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill spearheaded by borough lawmakers that would turn such a database into reality within a year.

Elaine Incandela of Deer Park was among the many community members who met with Senator Owen H. Lanza met today with State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Assemblyman Michael Cusick, and City Councilwoman Debi Rose to update Islanders on legislation they say will be a national model for fighting prescription drug abuse.

NYS Senate approves bill to help police catch meth-makers, but Assembly doesn't vote on it

Syracuse -- State and local police could go after meth-makers buying cold medicine in bulk under a proposed law the New York State Senate passed today.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. David Valesky, D-Oneida, mirrors a federal law that tracks and limits the amount of purchases of cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, an ingredient needed to make methamphetamine.
