Senator Montgomery's Anti-Shackling Legislation Receives Final Legislative Approval

Senator Montgomery's Anti-Shackling legislation (S.983-A) received final legislative approval on June 23, 2015. It now awaits consideration by the Governor before becoming law.

The bill prohibits the shackling of female inmates who are pregnant, in labor or eight weeks postpartum during transporation or hospitalization, except under extraordinary circumstances.

Murphy passes package of bills to toughen penalties for sex offenders

ALBANY, NY - State Senator Terrence Murphy, long known for his work in local government on Child Safety Zone initiatives, today announced the passage of a package of legislation he says would help keep communities safer from sexual predators. The seven bills are aimed at helping to prevent the most dangerous offenders from having contact with children and college students, require more stringent residency reporting requirements for the sex offender registry, strengthen penalties for those who help sex offenders evade registration requirements, and create a public awareness program to educate schools, community groups, and clergy on issues related to sex offenders.

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) announced today that Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation she sponsored to provide greater public protection and better treatment upon release for inmates who suffer from a mental illness. The new law will ensure that mentally ill inmates are no longer released from a state prison without a proper mental health evaluation and treatment plan being established.

O'Mara issues reminder on correction officer recruitment ~ Deadline for submitting application is November 25 ~ Find out more

Elmira, N.Y., November 21—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is currently undertaking a statewide correction officer recruitment effort.

A state Civil Service examination to fill new positions has been scheduled for January 10, 2015.  

Anyone interested in taking the exam must file an application by next Tuesday, November 25, 2014.
