On November 4, 2009, Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson was presented with the Benjamin Ward Leadership Award by the New York State Minorities in Criminal Justice, Inc.  Benjamin Ward served with great distinction as the former Commissioner of both the NYS Department of Correctional Services and the NYC Police Department.

Senators Hassell-Thompson and Sampson Call for Public Hearings To Address IOLA’s Funding Crisis

New York State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Chairwoman of the Standing Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction and Senator John Sampson, Senate Majority Conference Leader are calling for public hearings regarding the financial crisis that the New York State Interest On Lawyer Account Fund (“IOLA”) is facing.  The IOLA Fund, in existence since 1983, is used as a means to provide additional financial support to civil legal service organizations.  The money is used to provide lawyers to indigent people in dire circumstances who need representation for foreclosure actions,

Local officials rap camp re-use effort

GABRIELS — Local officials question how much effort the Department of Correctional Services put into marketing closed Camp Gabriels prison for re-use.

"I plan to find out how much marketing DOCS did," Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury) told the Press-Republican.

GABRIELS - A reuse report released Thursday names two users who may still be interested but contains no suggested or planned reuse for former minimum-security prison Camp Gabriels.

Interested users can still inspect the facility, but the state Department of Correctional Services plans to file a certificate of abandonment with the state Office of General Services.

SENATOR NOZZOLIO ANNOUNCES BUTLER PRISON TO STAY OPEN

Red Creek- Senator Nozzolio announced today that the New York State Department of Corrections has withdrawn its earlier decision to close the Butler Minimum Security Prison by October 1st of this year.

Nozzolio: Time To Stop The Massive Increase In Violent Criminal Parole Releases

Albany - State Senator Michael Nozzolio today announced the introduction of comprehensive legislation that will dramatically strengthen the State’s Parole Laws to help restrict the release of potentially dangerous violent felons. Senator Nozzolio was joined at the announcement by his Senate colleagues as well as the family of fallen police officer Harry Ryman, who was killed in the line of duty.
