Griffo, Task Force Members Release Report and Legislative Recommendations Regarding Heroin & Opioid Addiction

ALBANY – Sen. Joseph A. Griffo today joined his colleagues on the Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction to release a report that summarizes findings from statewide forums on drug addiction, treatment and crime. The report includes 25 bills that the Senate is expected to address before it recesses for the summer.

Protecting our communities from the scourge of heroin and pain killer addiction

The New York State Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction today released a report that summarizes its findings and proposes more than two dozen bills to address the growing crisis of heroin and opioid addiction, according to Senator Betty Little, a member of the task force.

The bipartisan task force was formed in March to examine the rapid rise in heroin and opioids use. Over the past nine weeks, task force members held 18 forums throughout New York including in Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chemung, Clinton, Genesee, Jefferson, Monroe, Nassau, New York, Oneida, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Sullivan counties.

RITCHIE: TASK FORCE RELEASES RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TREATING HEROIN ABUSE

Treatment, Prevention and Law Enforcement are Focus of New Report

Better treatment, increasing prevention programs and stepping up law enforcement efforts are the focus of a report released today by members of the New York State Senate Join Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction; a bipartisan group tasked with examining the issues surrounding the increase in drug abuse in New York State.

The report, which includes a comprehensive package of bills that target treatment, prevention and law enforcement issues, was complied following a series of more than a dozen forums held across the state—including one hosted by Senator Ritchie in Watertown—where experts, those in recovery, parents, law enforcement officials and other concerned citizens weighed in on how to best address the drug problem in New York State. Press Conference: JOINT TASK FORCE ON HEROIN AND OPIOID ADDICTION TO RELEASE REPORT AND LEGISLATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS

After conducting 18 public forums across the state, listening to 53 hours of testimony and speaking with more than 2,000 residents about the tragedy of the state’s heroin and opioid epidemic, the Senate’s bipartisan Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction will release its report tomorrow, Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 1:15 p.m. in Room 124 of the Capitol.

Twenty-five Senators who participated in the Task Force will be joined at the news conference by experts on substance abuse, and representatives of law enforcement, to make legislative recommendations to address issues surrounding the increase in drug abuse, addiction and drug related crimes in New York that has claimed countless lives and hurt families across the state.

Ranzenhofer to host public forum for Heroin and Opioid Addiction Task Force in Batavia

Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer will host a public forum for the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction this Friday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at Batavia City Hall, One Batavia City Centre.  Members of the public are invited to attend and participate in the discussion.

 

The forum is one of seventeen statewide to solicit input on the rise of heroin and opioids and to develop legislative recommendations for treating and preventing addiction and its consequences.
