SENATOR FUSCHILLO PROPOSES STRONGER DRUNK DRIVING LAWS

New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that he is sponsoring legislation to greatly strengthen the state’s drunk driving laws. The legislation would create tougher penalties for repeat drunk drivers, expand the state’s intoxication laws to include individuals who are high on inhalants, and give greater powers to law enforcement officers to collect valuable evidence in drunk driving cases.

Sen. Foley, Small Businesses Rally to Protect Jobs, Oppose Wine Sale in Grocery Stores

On Saturday, March 6, 2010, State Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) was joined by small business owners and activists in rallying against the governor’s proposal to sell wine in grocery stores. The measure, which is proposed as part of the governor’s budget, will costs thousands of jobs at small wine and liquor stores across the state and increase access to alcohol for underage drinkers.

Senate Passes Leandra's Law

New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) announced today that the Senate has passed Leandra’s Law, the nation’s strongest DWI law by a unanimous bipartisan vote. The legislation, co-sponsored by Padavan, is the largest increase of criminal penalties for DWI convictions and includes the expansion of measures aimed at preventing drunk driving incidences throughout the state.

SENATOR OWEN JOHNSON FIGHTS TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM DRUNK DRIVERS

The Senate passed bipartisan landmark legislation drastically increasing the penalty for any person who drives intoxicated with a child passenger. Two recent fatal incidents involving intoxicated drivers with child passengers have highlighted the need for stronger measures to prevent or punish persons who drive intoxicated with children as passengers.

This measure provides for the harshest penalties and most significant expansion of preventative measures to date for any offender convicted of driving while intoxicated with a child passenger.
