STATEMENT BY SENATOR BILL LARKIN ON THE GOVERNOR'S GUN CONTROL LEGISLATION

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C-I, Cornwall-on-Hudson) issued the following statement:

"I voted against the Governor's proposal because I firmly believe it is too restrictive on our legal, law abiding gun owners and does not adequately address the issue of illegal weapons and their use during the commission of a crime.  Gun violence will not be stopped by restricting lawful, honest gun owners.  It is career criminals and their access to illegal weapons that are the main problem facing our cities, towns and villages – not people who support the second amendment."

Statement on SAFE Legislation

"After numerous negotiations with the Governor and Assembly, we have passed a bipartisan gun safety package that will keep New Yorkers safer in schools, homes and neighborhoods and help curb gun violence by going after criminals who use guns illegally. Highlights of this legislation include increased penalties for criminals who use a gun in the commission of a crime on school grounds or straw purchases.

It also strengthens Kendra’s Law to insure individuals with mental illness to get the treatment they need and those who pose a danger to themselves or others will not be able to legally access to a gun. In addition, this legislation proposes life in prison without parole to anyone who shoots and kills a first responder.

“The tragedies we have experienced in recent years, like last month in Newtown, Connecticut, deeply concern me and the vast majority of our state and nation. The senseless taking of innocent lives is unacceptable in any capacity. In our Constitution are certain rights which provide the foundation of America’s greatness. Its Second Amendment in no uncertain terms guarantees the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.

Senator Martins on Gun Control

Don’t Mistake Motion for Progress

There’s been a lot of talk about gun control lately but not enough thinking. It’s an understandable knee-jerk reaction to the heartbreaking massacre at Newtown that has jolted us into action on gun-violence, but we must guard against the ideologues on both the left and the right who seek to hijack the discussion with nonsense that is neither grounded nor realistic. This issue is too important and the sensible people in the middle must resist being crowded out.
