Measure Provides Timely Notification to Law Enforcement of Abuse of Children in Residential Care

The New York State Senate today passed legislation by Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C – Poughkeepsie), that would modify current reporting procedures involving the abuse of children in residential care (S. 6563). The measure guarantees that reports of certain abuse will be immediately forwarded to law enforcement. The passage of this legislation comes amidst the latest announcement by Governor Andrew Cuomo of his proposal to establish the Justice Center for the Protection of Persons with Special Needs.

Osborne Association Members Lobby Lawmakers, Ask for Support of Montgomery Bills

Representatives of the Osborne Association came to Albany to ask lawmakers to support Senator Montgomery's legislation that was introduced to addresses concerns raised by three young people whose parents are in prison. The bills are:

S 6044-A: Directs the commissioner of corrections and community supervision to establish and maintain a public website that provides information concerning specific visitation rules, regulations, policies and procedures for all correctional facilities.

4/25/2012: Queens County Bar Association

Senator Huntley enjoyed visiting the Queens County Bar Association students on their annual trip to Albany to meet with various legislators. Senator Huntley discussed the importance of Education, Drug Prevention and the seriousness of Bullying and Harassment towards others. She also answered some questions ranging from her early days as a School Board President to being a NYS Senator and how she is trying to make a difference for not only Queens residents but New York State as well by introducing good legislation. State Passes Fiscally Responsible Budget That Respects Taxpayers

Budget Comes Early, Controls Spending and Holds The Line On Taxes

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan hailed the 2012 state budget today as lawmakers approved the spending plan ahead of the April 1st deadline, marking the second consecutive year New York State will enact an on-time budget.

“Passing a second on-time budget in as many years is indicative of the larger progress we’ve seen lately in Albany. Just as late budgets were once a symbol of dysfunction, on-time budgets are symbolic of continued progress,” the Senator said. “Even more important than passing an on-time budget, is that we passed a fiscally responsible budget that respects New York’s taxpayers and keeps the State moving forward.”

Budget Update From State Senator David J. Valesky

The New York State Legislature has completed passage of an on-time budget for the second year in a row. Though it was another challenging budget, requiring the closure of a $3.5 billion deficit, we were able to balance the budget without tax increases or fiscal gimmickry. In addition, overall spending was reduced for the second straight year, the frist time this has happened in at least three decades.

Governor Cuomo and Legislative Leaders Announce Agreement on 2012-13 State Budget

Governor Cuomo released the following announcement on March 27, 2012:

The Budget continues the Governor’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while creating jobs and strengthening communities across the state. It closes a multi-billion dollar deficit with no new taxes, fees or gimmicks, limits spending growth to two percent or below for the second year in a row, and launches the New York Works Task Force to invest billions of dollars to rebuild the state's roads, bridges, parks, and other infrastructure and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Governor Signs DNA Databank Expansion Into Law

Gallivan Hails DNA as "Best Tool For Law Enforcement Since Fingerprints"

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan applauded Governor Cuomo today after signing DNA databank expansion legislation into law, making New York State the first "all crimes DNA" state in the nation. The State Senate passed legislation to implement the expansion of the state’s DNA Databank in January.

The new law will require criminals convicted of all felonies, as well as all penal law misdemeanors, to submit DNA samples.

SENATE PASSES 2012-13 BUDGET RESOLUTION

Gallivan: “Senate Plan Cuts Taxes, Reforms Medicaid, Protects Seniors and Schools.”

The New York State Senate voted to approve its 2012-13 Senate Budget resolution, continuing its focus on state spending, job creation, and structural reform to government.

The Senate budget, at just under $132.5 billion, keeps the total state spending increase below two percent, and spends less than the Executive Budget. The budget closes a $2 billion budget deficit and builds on last year’s successes in putting the state’s fiscal house in order.

2/18/2012: 41st Annual NYS Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Caucus

(Albany, New York) On Saturday February 18th, Senator Shirley L. Huntley (D-Jamaica) had the opportunity to address and meet with youth who came to Albany to be part of the Annual Youth Summit at the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Caucus. Close to 50% of the youth traveled from Queens, and the event has become increasingly popular over the years. Senator Huntley has made it a priority to attend this Summit and speak with youth on a myriad of issues such as education, bullying, and youth employment. “We must empower our youth and provide them with resources and confidence to fulfill their goals and achieve their dreams,” said Senator Huntley.

NY Youth Works Program Provides $62 Million for Job Training and $25 Million in Tax Credits to Combat High Unemployment among Inner City Youth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of "NY Youth Works," a statewide program to combat the unacceptably high unemployment rates among inner city youth in communities across New York. The new program, passed last month in an extraordinary session of the state legislature, includes $25 million in tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed and disadvantaged youth and $62 million to support job training programs.

As a result of the tough decisions and bipartisan cooperation of the past year, the State is able to close the current deficit without broad cuts, new taxes, fees or gimmicks. In addition, the Governor’s Executive Budget proposes major reforms to reduce the cost of government for taxpayers, implements accountability in our schools to put students first, and puts the State in a position to leverage billions of dollars in private sector investment to grow the economy and create jobs.
