Sunnyside Post wrote on the latest string of groping incidents Sunnyside and Woodside. Senator Gianaris has been working to inform the community about this danger by speaking at press conferences and passing out flyers on ways to stay protected on the streets.

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer held a press conference on 46th Street and Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside today to alert the public and aggressively search for a perpetrator who has been groping women, and one 12-year-old girl in the Sunnyside/Woodside neighborhoods of Queens.[...]

Officials warn Sunnyside of bicycle-riding groper

The Times Ledger reported on the series of groping incidents in Western Queens. Senator Gianaris, in addition to his legislation that makes groping children a felony, has been advocating for community involvement for safer streets.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan) and Sunnyside electeds passed out fliers near the No. 7 train 46th Street-Bliss Street station early Monday morning, warning commuters of a groper in the area who has attacked five women and a 12-year-old girl.

Senator Adams Speaks at Martial Arts Self-Defense Class at Kings Bay Y at Windor Terrace

On Sunday, October 23, the Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace offered martial arts self-defense classes in response to the recent sexual assaults that have occurred in the community.  Senator Adams shared sexual assault safety tips and crime tips with everyone to ensure safety for themselves and the community.  Invited experts engaged in dialogue on crime prevention, demonstrated self-defense techniques designed for women, and helped them make sound decisions when faced with potentially dangerous situations.

Sunnyside and Woodside concerned over sex attacks

The Queens Courier reported on the recent attacks on several Queens women. Senator Gianaris was present at the public conference to alert the community about the recent attackers. The senator's bill requiring the act of groping to be counted as a felony is just one way to attempt to reduce such dangers to our community.

For the past month, women in Sunnyside and Woodside have been looking over their shoulders for a predator on pedals.

With incidents of sexual assault rising across the five boroughs, the neighboring communities are the most recent areas to experience repeated sexual attacks on women.

Police Investigate String Of Attacks On Queens Women

NY1 reported on the recent attacks on Queens women. Senator Gianaris attended the press conference to speak out against Sunnyside/Woodside sexual predators. He also handed out flyers to raise awareness about these issues and inform people on how to act when they find themselves in such dangerous situations.

Police were searching Monday for a man they said tried to sexually assault a 23-year-old woman in Queens the previous night.

On Wednesday night, police say a man assaulted a 23-year-old woman in Laurelton.

Police were also looking for another man in a string of attacks around Woodside and Sunnyside.

Commemorating National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

On Wednesday, October 5th, Senator Robach had the privilege to attend a press conference in commemoration of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The press conference, hosted by Alternatives for Battered Women, was held at the Crime Victims' Resource Center, in Rochester. I have been happy to work with advocates, law enforcement, and victims to sponsor legislation, which has strengthened domestic violence laws. CYBERBULLYING: ANOTHER CRY FOR HELP - By Senator Steve Saland

In the wake of the most recent publicized tragedy in which a young boy, merely 14 years old, took his life to escape bullying, we must consider our response to the torment this child must have suffered. We know too well that as horrid as this occurrence was, it does not stand in isolation.

While some may advocate for stronger laws that would impose a criminal penalty on bullies, it is even more important that we address acts of bullying before it escalates to the point of no return.

Senator Gianaris Applauds Effectiveness of New Driving Law

Twice as many texting-while-driving tickets handed out this year than last year.

Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris praised the effectiveness of a recently enacted driving law, which has led to double the number of drivers ticketed for texting while driving in August 2011 than in August 2010.

The Distracted Driving Bill makes the use of portable devices while driving a primary offense. Previously, using these devices while behind the wheel was a secondary offense and police could only stop motorists if they were committing another, primary offense – such as speeding or running a red light.
