Power for Jobs Extended Two Weeks In the Absence of a Three-Way Agreement

 

Sens. Aubertine, Maziarz, Gov release new plan to make program permanent, focus on Upstate

ALBANY (May 18, 2010)—State Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine today voted to extend Power for Jobs until June 2, which will keep the program in place for employers statewide saving around 250,000 jobs while negotiations on a final bill continue. The Assembly proposed this extender in the absence of a position in that house on Power for Jobs.

Griffo Wants Power for Jobs Program Made Permanent

Griffo Calls for Immediate Action on Power for Jobs

 

(Albany ) Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-IP-C, Rome) today called for immediate action to extend New York’s Power for Jobs program and also called for a June deadline for action to make the program permanent.

As the Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, Griffo voted in committee yesterday and on the Senate floor today for Senate Bill 7573-A, which  would make Power for Jobs permanent, instead of requiring legislative action each year to keep the program running. S.7573-A now goes to the Assembly for their consideration before it can come to the Governor for his approval.

While headlines focus on individual unemployment and the travails of big-name firms, New York City’s small businesses have suffered greatly in the current re- cession. Even in the best of times, small firms in the city often get by with razor thin profit margins. But with their customers spending far less in this downturn while many of their fixed costs—from taxes and rent to insurance—remain as high as ever, numerous local companies have had to downsize or shut down. Countless others are just trying to hang on until business picks up again.
