SENATE PASSES 2012-13 BUDGET RESOLUTION

Gallivan: “Senate Plan Cuts Taxes, Reforms Medicaid, Protects Seniors and Schools.”

The New York State Senate voted to approve its 2012-13 Senate Budget resolution, continuing its focus on state spending, job creation, and structural reform to government.

The Senate budget, at just under $132.5 billion, keeps the total state spending increase below two percent, and spends less than the Executive Budget. The budget closes a $2 billion budget deficit and builds on last year’s successes in putting the state’s fiscal house in order.

Astoria\LIC Kiwanis Hosts Holiday Auction Extravaganza

The Queens Gazette wrote about the Astoria/LIC Kiwanis Club holiday auction that sought to raise funds for charity. Senator Gianaris auctioned off his tie in order to provide scholarships for college hopefuls.

An annual local tradition, The Astoria\LIC Kiwanis Club holiday auction was attended by more than 125 members and guests who came to bid on a host of items for charity on December 5 at Riccardo’s by the Bridge.

 

“It’s one of the greatest events of the year,” said state Senator Mike Gianaris who had the privilege of auctioning off his own tie to help raise money to provide scholarships for graduating high school students who are going to college.

SUNY2020 Maintains Affordability of SUNY System, Authorizes Millions in Capital Funding That Will Create Jobs and Grow Economy, Re-Establishes SUNY & CUNY as Economic Engines

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R, C, I – Port Jefferson), Chairman of the New York State Senate’s Higher Education Committee  lauded New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo for his leadership in recognizing that SUNY is an intricate part of New York State’s economic development strategy as landmark SUNY2020 legislation was signed into law today.

The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.
