Senator Gianaris Calls For A Vote On Redistricting Reform Legislation

After Governor Cuomo introduced his own legislation creating an independent commission to redraw district lines, I issued a press release applauding his efforts. Governor Cuomo's redistricting reform legislation hews closely to the legislation I authored and championed first in 2005. As the legislature's leading advocate of redistricting reform, I have introduced my redistricting reform legislation in the Senate.

September 2010 Community Bulletin

Message from Liz . . .

Already post-Labor Day–wow!

In reviewing what summer 2010 will be remembered for, I am struck by the BP oil spill disaster in the Gulf, the hottest summer on record in New York City and a disturbing upsurge in Islamophobia throughout the US, including right here in New York City.

Early September this year brings the Jewish New Year (L’SHANA TOVA 5771 to those of you who are celebrating) and so too the end of Ramadan for the Muslim community, which is celebrated with a big feast, that happens to fall on September 11th this year. Jewish and Muslim holidays move dates every year due to solar changes.

A Celebration: 90 Years of Women Voting

This week, we celebrated the 90th anniversary of a great victory for

women and a radical and hard fought win for American democracy:

women’s suffrage -- the right to VOTE!

Sitting here in 2010, it’s hard to imagine a time in American history

during which women were not allowed to vote, especially as we watch

women run for all levels of elected office. But as we celebrate the

90th anniversary of American women’s right to vote, we, as men and

women, must ask ourselves if we are honoring the plight of so many who

came before us and fought for this most fundamental right. The sad

reality is that in areas around the world, women and men are still
