Trees are coming to Sunnyside/Woodside

Sunnyside Post wrote about Senator Gianaris' continued work to get more trees planted in Sunnyside and Woodside. It is expected that hundreds of trees will be planted in the area within the next two years, thanks to the help of local leaders.

Hundreds of trees will be planted in Sunnyside and Woodside within the next two years, according to the neighborhood’s political leaders.

State Sen. Mike Gianaris, who wrote a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg in April insisting that more trees be planted on the south side of Queens Blvd, said that the first wave of tree planting is likely to begin in October.

SENATOR MONTGOMERY HONORS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT DOROTHY BURNHAM, A BROOKLYN “RENAISSANCE WOMAN”

The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.

    The New York State Senate gave final legislative passage to the “Power NY Act” to secure the state’s energy future by expanding the availability of affordable, clean and reliable electricity, while also creating jobs and boosting the economy. Power NY (S.5844), sponsored by Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane), has three main components: it reauthorizes and modernizes the licensing process for major electric generating facilities (also known as Article X), provides incentives to consumers for energy efficiency investments, and explores the potential for additional solar power generation in the state.

Governor signs net metering bill; announces grants for renewables

A bill meant to ease regulations on farmers and others who at least partially produce their own energy was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, according to one of the bill’s sponsors.

The new law, which was pushed by Senate Energy Chair George Maziarz, R-Newfane, Niagara County and Bronx Assemblyman Marcus Crespo, allows for the net metering of energy production happen off site.

New York Needs To Take A Gas Tax Holiday

ALBANY, 05/24/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced senate approval of legislation eliminating the state gas tax for three key holiday weekends to help families cope with the rising cost at the pump.

“New Yorkers are facing increasing costs at every turn and soaring gas prices have many tapped out,” said Senator Seward.  “Families need a break, especially over the summer holidays when many are traveling.  A gas tax holiday would provide some much needed relief.”

It seems like Albany has been talking about clean energy and its potential to create jobs for a very long time. Fortunately, Senator Liz Krueger is doing something about it, and we’d like to thank her for real leadership on this issue. Right now, the state Legislature is examining a major initiative to revitalize New York’s economy by adding an impressive 5,000 megawatts of solar power capacity. As a co-sponsor of the so-called “New York Solar Industry Development and Jobs Act,” Senator Krueger is playing an important role, helping blaze the trail toward a greener, stronger New York.

Strong Push Against Fracking

On the day of a large rally outside the Capitol, Senate Democrats introduced the first significant legislation against hydraulic fracturing since the 2010 moratorium imposed by former Gov. David Paterson and the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Sens. Tony Avella, D-Whitestone, Liz Krueger, D-Manhattan, and Joseph Addabbo, D-Queens, introduced a package of bills April 11 that includes three bills for tighter regulations and transparency for oil and gas drilling and a bill by Avella to ban hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking, in New York state.
