The State Senate Democratic Majority will bring nine bills to the floor today demonstrating their commitment to environmental conservation; the Majority’s “Earth Day 2010” package will strengthen environmental and citizen protections to create a cleaner, greener and healthier New York for future generations. Today’s legislation will inform consumers of mileage when purchasing a vehicle, ban the use of some chemicals on grounds at day care centers and schools, and foster recycling programs for computers and other forms of e-waste, as well as rechargeable batteries.

Bill would encourage solar, wind power

— PLATTSBURGH — A measure to promote expanded use of solar- and wind-powered electricity-generation systems has been approved by both legislative chambers in Albany.

Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury) said the bill, which she co-sponsored, changes the current net-metering law to remove restrictions that prevented many non-residential customers from taking part.

The legislation (S. 6700) will enable residents to take full advantage of net metering, a program that offers utility bill discounts in exchange for unused power generated through alternative energy sources. Law expands ability of businesses to sell alternative power

GREENWICH -- State Sen. Elizabeth Little, R-Queensbury, is touting a measure aimed at helping businesses take advantage of solar and wind energy.

Gov. David Paterson approved the measure on Tuesday that closes a loophole in a law passed in 2009 that allowed non-residential solar energy users to sell excess power back to a utility.

Aubertine (S.6700) to amend the state’s net metering law to clear hurdles and allow farms, small businesses, municipalities and other non-residential customers to reduce their energy costs by generating clean electricity and selling it back to the grid.
