Senator Montgomery Announces NYSABPRL's 41st Annual Legislative Conference Workshop & Event Schedule

The 41st Annual Legislative Conference of the NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators will convene on Friday, February 17th and conclude on Sunday, February 19th, 2012. The theme of this year’s conference is “Open Doors to Employment, Opens Doors to Empowerment."

The Conference schedule of educational workshops and weekend-long events is included here in a pdf format that can be downloaded.  More information on the Legislative Conference may be obtained by visiting www.nysabprl.org.

New York State Senate Earth Day Competition 2012 Poster Contest

Dear Superintendents and Principals:

Earth Day is April 22, 2012.   

In addition, landmark legislation has been passed to help support this effort,   such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.

The New York State Senate takes this opportunity to celebrate the great strides New York has made in helping to improve our environment.  From expanding the bottle bill to promoting green energy, New York is helping to make a difference.

Posters must be no larger than 11” x 17”.  Entries should be photographed and submitted electronically, preferably in jpeg format via www.nysenate.gov.  All submissions must be uploaded to the web-site by March 9, 2012.

SENATOR MONTGOMERY HONORS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT DOROTHY BURNHAM, A BROOKLYN “RENAISSANCE WOMAN”

The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.

Senator Krueger Receives A Passing Grade From Environmental Advocates

A scorecard released on June 8 by EPL/Environmental Advocates indicates that the vast majority of New York's senators aren't doing enough to support legislation that would protect the environment.

The preliminary scorecard tracked state senator's voting records on bills this session that would have an effect on air, land and water quality, as well as wildlife and public health. A complete Voters' Guide scorecard, including Assembly member rankings, is set to be released this fall.

The rankings were divided on partisan lines, with Democrats scoring an average of 41 and Republicans at an average of 24.

Gianaris Wants More Trees

Queens Gazette wrote about Senator Gianaris' request for more trees to be planted in Sunnyside and Woodside.

As part of his continued commitment to improving the quality of life in Western Queens, state Senator Michael Gianaris sent a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg requesting the planting of trees along various avenues in Sunnyside and Woodside. Gianaris is requesting that trees be planted along Queens Boulevard, 48th Avenue, 47th Avenue and 43rd Avenues between 38th Street and 48th Street.

Gianaris pushes his clean-air bill

Queens Campaigner wrote about how Senator Gianaris commemorated Earth Day this year.

In celebration of Earth Day last week, state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) touted the pro-environment legislation he has recently introduced that would reduce emissions and crack down on polluters.

“It’s been a priority of mine from the first day I was elected to the [state] Assembly,” Gianaris said.

The senator said that since his district is adjacent to the Con Edison Astoria Complex, on 20th Avenue between Shore Boulevard and 31st Street in Astoria and contains the Ravenswood Power Plant in Astoria, air quality has always been a major concern.

National Grid’s “Earth Day 2011” at Gardiner Park

Senator Owen H. Johnson celebrated Earth Day at a volunteer community project at Gardiner Park in Bay Shore.   National Grid sponsored the Earth Day cleanup event on April 21, 2011 partnering with other community groups including Bay Shore Schools, Bay Shore Beautification Society, Keep Islip Clean, Boy Scouts and Suffolk County Parks.  Volunteers cleaned trails, planted flowers and trees, stained benches, pruned branches, and restored the historical fence as part of the day’s activities.

Gianaris Pledges To Continue Fighting For A Greener New York

The Queens Gazette wrote an article on my participation in Earth Day this year. Senator Gianaris is committed to protecting and conserving our environment.

State Senator Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) celebrated Earth Day on April 22, by continuing his advocacy for stronger environmental laws to better protect and conserve our environment.

Gianaris is a longtime leader in the effort to clean the environment. Recently, he introduced a series of legislative proposals to ensure better environmental policies in New York state.
