Annual Tour De Queens

Queens Gazette wrote about Senator Gianaris' participation in the Tour de Queens.

A record number of people biked through Eastern and Southern Queens on July 10 as part of the Fourth Annual Tour de Queens. Around 2,000 bicyclists were joined by New York Mets mascot Mr. Met, state Senator Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) and Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson for the event.

“Bicycling is truly a fiveborough phenomenon,” Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives Paul Steely White said. “Thousands of people proved that in Queens yesterday as they rolled through 20 miles of New York’s largest borough for the fourth year in a row.”

Monroe Litho Honored as Green Business

Rochester printing company Monroe Litho is being recognized by the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute for leadership in sustainability with the printing industry.

 

The company, located in downtown Rochester, earned the Pollution Prevention Achievement Award for its environmental initiatives with High Tech Rochester, the local Regional Technology Development Center. The collaboration helped reduce process waste by 100 percent and water usage by 5.9 percent, decrease emissions by 29 percent, and reduce fuel used in the transportation of paper by 31 percent.

SENATOR MONTGOMERY HONORS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT DOROTHY BURNHAM, A BROOKLYN “RENAISSANCE WOMAN”

The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.

    The New York State Senate gave final legislative passage to the “Power NY Act” to secure the state’s energy future by expanding the availability of affordable, clean and reliable electricity, while also creating jobs and boosting the economy. Power NY (S.5844), sponsored by Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane), has three main components: it reauthorizes and modernizes the licensing process for major electric generating facilities (also known as Article X), provides incentives to consumers for energy efficiency investments, and explores the potential for additional solar power generation in the state.

To Reduce Amount of Paper Used in the Legislature

                - S.357 Passes Overwhemingly in Senate, Sent to New York State Assembly –

 

Today, the Senate passed S.357, sponsored by Senator Robach, which would reduce the amount of paper wasted in the New York State Legislature. Specifically, this bill would provide members of the Legislature with electronic versions of bills, instead of paper. The benefits would be especially pronounced when voting on budget bills since they are voluminous by nature.

Senator Krueger Receives A Passing Grade From Environmental Advocates

A scorecard released on June 8 by EPL/Environmental Advocates indicates that the vast majority of New York's senators aren't doing enough to support legislation that would protect the environment.

The preliminary scorecard tracked state senator's voting records on bills this session that would have an effect on air, land and water quality, as well as wildlife and public health. A complete Voters' Guide scorecard, including Assembly member rankings, is set to be released this fall.

The rankings were divided on partisan lines, with Democrats scoring an average of 41 and Republicans at an average of 24.

It seems like Albany has been talking about clean energy and its potential to create jobs for a very long time. Fortunately, Senator Liz Krueger is doing something about it, and we’d like to thank her for real leadership on this issue. Right now, the state Legislature is examining a major initiative to revitalize New York’s economy by adding an impressive 5,000 megawatts of solar power capacity. As a co-sponsor of the so-called “New York Solar Industry Development and Jobs Act,” Senator Krueger is playing an important role, helping blaze the trail toward a greener, stronger New York.

As part of his continued commitment to improving the quality of life in Western Queens, state Senator Michael Gianaris sent a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg requesting the planting of trees along various avenues in Sunnyside and Woodside. Gianaris is requesting that trees be planted along Queens Boulevard, 48th Avenue, 47th Avenue and 43rd Avenues between 38th Street and 48th Street.

Senator Gianaris Fights To Rid LIC Of Loud Trains

Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris is continuing his fight to improve western Queens’ quality of life by requesting that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) immediately cease the idling of Long Island Railroad (LIRR) trains at the Long Island City rail yard in Queens. These trains pollute the air with the excessive amount of fuel they waste while sitting idle and disturb the neighborhood with the loud noises of their running engines.
