Kids Bike Safety Rodeo- Seaford

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & COUNTY EXECUTIVE MANGANO SPONSOR FREE KIDPIX PHOTO ID PROGRAM IN WANTAGH

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently sponsored a free KidPix photo ID program in Wantagh. 

     Families who participated in the program received a free, wallet sized kidpix card with their child’s name, physical description, contact information, fingerprint, and photograph. In the event that a child goes missing, parents can give the KidPix card to law enforcement as a helpful tool to help return the child home more quickly.

SENATOR GALLIVAN AND EC SHERIFF HOWARD ANNOUNCE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER PROGRAM FOR FIVE ERIE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS

ECSO Deputy Will Rotate Between Alden, Holland, Iroquois, North Collins and Springville

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) announced today that he has secured state funding to employ a School Resource Officer (SRO) at five Erie County school districts beginning in the 2013-14 academic year.

The program is being administered in cooperation with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, which will provide a Sheriff’s Deputy to serve as the SRO on a rotating basis at Iroquois Central School District, Alden Central School District, Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District, North Collins Central School District and Holland Central School District.

Senator O'Brien, librarians discuss summer reading initiatives, promote Senate's "NYRead.com" tool

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Today, Senator Ted O'Brien encouraged families of the 55th Senate district to participate in the State Senate's summer reading program, available at "NYRead.com." This Senate site tracks books read by youth in the district and makes age-appropriate suggestions based on what other students throughout the state are reading. On NYRead.com, parents can create accounts for their children and log all of their reading throughout the summer. Top readers from throughout the district will be recognized by the Senator later this year.

140 Yeshivas Attend Felder’s Transportation Workshop

Over 140 school administrators and transportation coordinators from across the five boroughs packed into Ateres Chaya Hall in Borough Park on Wednesday, June 26, to attend a workshop hosted by Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) about the new changes to the school bus transportation law. Each attendee received a packet from Senator Felder containing valuable information designed to help administrators navigate the new changes.

This past March, the New York State Legislature passed Senator Felder’s historic legislation that provides an increased level of safety and protection for grade school children in the City of New York. Starting in the 2013-2014 school year, any public, private or parochial school that holds academic classes from 9:30 A.M. or earlier to 4:00 P.M. or later, is now eligible to receive enhanced transportation services, with pick up and drop off within one block of a child’s home. An allocation of $12 million has been earmarked for this program.

Senator O'Brien fixes loophole in sex offender registry

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Last week, Senator Ted O'Brien’s bill making it a felony for a convicted sex offender to provide a false address or other identifying information to law enforcement for the sex offender registry was passed. The bill received unanimous support in the New York State Senate.

GALLIVAN ANNOUNCES FUNDING RESTORATIONS TO DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED SUPPORT PROGRAMS

ALBANY – Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, 59th District) announced that the New York State Senate reached an agreement today with the State Assembly and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to restore $90 million in cuts to not-for-profit support services and programs for the state’s developmentally disabled.

During this year’s budget process, Senator Gallivan and the State Senate were successfully able to restore a substantial portion of the initially proposed cuts, but significant reductions remained that threatened the welfare and stability of many individuals and families.

FELDER: “WE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT AND WE WON!”

Legislation (S4777D) co-sponsored by Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) that protects providers of services for the developmentally disabled from state funding cuts passed the New York State Senate today. The bill was sponsored by Senator Marty Golden (R-C, Brooklyn). The legislation would appropriate up to $90 million, or as much as is needed, to the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) to protect providers from funding reductions if recommended savings measures fall short of projections.

“We fought the good fight and we won,” said Senator Felder. “We did not back down. We did not take no for an answer. And we delivered for one of our most vulnerable populations. Restoring this funding was unequivocally the right thing to do, and I am extremely proud to have been part of this effort.”

Senate Passes Bill that Requires Life-Saving Screenings on Newborns

I was pleased to co-sponsor S.270, legislation that requires facilities to perform pulse oximetry screenings on newborns, and even more pleased to meet a family who directly benefited from this test. Jacob Thomas was born April 10, 2012 and appeared to be a healthy newborn. Two days later, his skin turned bluish. A nurse performed a pulse oximetry test on Jacob and learned that his blood-oxygen level was dangerously low. He was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, which is a common birth defect.

SENATE GIVES FINAL PASSAGE TO BILL TO TEST NEWBORNS FOR CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS THROUGH PULSE OXIMETRY SCREENING

The New York State Senate today gave final legislative passage to a bill that would require all birthing facilities to screen newborn babies for congenital heart defects (CHDs) through a process called pulse oximetry screening. The bill (S.270B), sponsored by Senator William Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson), will save lives through earlier detection of possible heart defects.

“Pulse oximetry screenings are painless, and take one minute to perform,” said Senator Larkin. “By performing this simple test, doctors can take the appropriate and necessary steps to ensure that newborns get the care they need, should they have heart defects. Simply, this measure will save lives.”

Today, Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein and State Senate Labor Committee Chairwoman Diane Savino joined supermodel Coco Rocha, former child models and victims to announce legislation that will protect child models from exploitation and abuse. These abuses--and the shortfalls in New York's child labor laws-- are detailed in a report prepared by the Independent Democratic Conference, also released today.

Senator Peralta Invites All Children To Join His Summer Reading Program

Senator Jose Peralta is inviting all students in kindergarten through eighth grade to participate in the New York State Senate's Summer Reading Program.  This program is aimed at assisting children keep their reading skills honed and minds sharp during their time away from school.

With the end of the school year in sight, many students are anxiously awaiting the summer months. To keep school age children in the mindset of learning, the New York State Senate, in conjunction with the New York State Library, offers the Summer Reading Program to students across the State.

Participating students will use an online journal to keep track of their reading progress throughout the summer. Children who submit a completed journal will receive a Summer Reading Certificate. To have the children register, please visit www.nyread.com.
