SENATOR FUSCHILLO & NEW YORK COALITION FOR TRANSPORTATION SAFETY SPONSOR KIDS BIKE SAFETY RODEO

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety recently sponsored a kids bike safety rodeo for families at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. 

     “It’s important that children know how to be safe when riding their bikes, especially with the growing number of cars on the roads today,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee. “This program taught children safety tips to use while riding their bikes, as well as provided free equipment checks to make sure they are as safe as possible. I thank the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety for partnering with me to perform this important service.”

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently sponsored a free KidPix photo ID program in Massapequa Park. 

     Families who participated in the program received a free, wallet sized kidpix card with their child’s name, physical description, contact information, fingerprint, and photograph. In the event that a child goes missing, parents can give the KidPix card to law enforcement as a helpful tool to help return the child home more quickly.

NYS Department of Health's 50 Years of Vital Newborn Screening Press Conference

Senator Bill Larkin had the privilege of speaking at the NYS Department of Health’s 50 Years of Vital Newborn Screening press conference held in Albany.  His legislation, recently signed into law by Governor Cuomo, requiring newborns to be screened for Congenital Heart Defects will now be included as one of the 46 tests required by New York State.

     The free child seat safety check will be held from 9 am to 1 pm at Babylon Town Hall, located at 200 East Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst. Officers from the New York State Police will be performing free safety seat inspections to make sure that drivers have their children’s car seats properly installed and secured.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO REQUIRE CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT SCREENINGS FOR NEWBORNS

Congenital Heart Defects are the Leading Cause of Infant Death Due to Birth Defects

          Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently announced that legislation he supported that that will require birthing facilities such as general hospitals and clinics to screen newborns for congenital heart defects through pulse oximetry screening, also known as “pulse ox,” has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo.

Car Seat Safety Check

Governor Cuomo Signs Jay-J's Law, which Senator Kennedy Authored to Toughen Penalties for Child Abusers

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation Monday enacting Jay-J’s Law, which allows for tougher penalties against offenders who have been convicted of repeatedly abusing a child. Senator Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, first authored the bill in late 2011, and since then, he has worked closely with Jay-J's family, the Retzer's, to push for final passage of the bill. 

“Assaulting a child is a heinous crime that must be met with the strictest of punishments,” Governor Cuomo said. “By enacting Jay-J’s Law we are taking a step forward in safeguarding children across New York State, and immediately ensuring that repeat offenders are met with heightened penalties that match the seriousness of their actions.”

Kennedy Urges Governor to Sign Jay-J’s Law

With Governor’s signature, Jay-J’s bill will officially become Jay-J’s Law.

The bill has been delivered to the Governor; under state law he now has until the end of the month to sign it.

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – Senator Tim Kennedy is urging Governor Cuomo to sign Jay-J’s Law – which the State Legislature approved last month. The bill has been delivered to the Governor, and it is now waiting for his signature to become law. The Governor has 10 days – not counting Sundays – from July 19, the day the bill was delivered, to sign it into law, giving him until the end of the month.

SENATOR GALLIVAN AND EC SHERIFF HOWARD ANNOUNCE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER PROGRAM FOR FIVE ERIE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS

ECSO Deputy Will Rotate Between Alden, Holland, Iroquois, North Collins and Springville

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) announced today that he has secured state funding to employ a School Resource Officer (SRO) at five Erie County school districts beginning in the 2013-14 academic year.

The program is being administered in cooperation with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, which will provide a Sheriff’s Deputy to serve as the SRO on a rotating basis at Iroquois Central School District, Alden Central School District, Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District, North Collins Central School District and Holland Central School District.

Senator O'Brien, librarians discuss summer reading initiatives, promote Senate's "NYRead.com" tool

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Today, Senator Ted O'Brien encouraged families of the 55th Senate district to participate in the State Senate's summer reading program, available at "NYRead.com." This Senate site tracks books read by youth in the district and makes age-appropriate suggestions based on what other students throughout the state are reading. On NYRead.com, parents can create accounts for their children and log all of their reading throughout the summer. Top readers from throughout the district will be recognized by the Senator later this year.

Senator O'Brien fights to restore OPWDD funding, continues to work with advocates to address future needs
