New York State IDC Day Care Report

The IDC released a new, investigative report today revealing the lackluster state of day care centers across New York. In preparing the report, the IDC examined on-site inspection reports of over 1,500 day care centers statewide.

The inspections, which are regularly conducted by the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), revealed that hundreds of day care centers across New York have accrued multiple violations over the past 24 months, with little or no enforcement by OCFS.

Senate Passes Bill Creating "Deadbeat Parents Most Wanted List"

The New York State Senate today passed legislation that creates a “deadbeat parents most wanted list” of financially-delinquent parents who are substantially late or behind on child support payments. The bill (S.4114), sponsored by Senator Martin Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), is intended to locate parents who owe more than $10,000 in child support payments.

On Friday, May 17, 2013, the Child Care Council of Westchester held its annual awards event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in White Plains to recognize exceptional individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the child care industry in Westchester County. Over 250 people attended the Awards Breakfast. Recognizing those community individuals who have significantly supported early care and education in Westchester, the Council presented its 2013 CHAMPIONS OF CHILD CARE AWARDS to NYS Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, The Editorial Board of The Journal News and The Dannon Company.

Grisanti-Sponsored Bill Passes in Senate to Protect Children From Jewelry Made With Harmful Materials

The New York State Senate today passed legislation that creates comprehensive safety requirements for children's jewelry to prevent exposure to harmful materials. The bill (S3947), sponsored by Senator Mark Grisanti (R-I, North Buffalo), regulate heavy metals, magnets, and batteries in jewelry intended for use by children age 12 and younger, consistent with the federal Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. "This legislation is another step in protecting our children from harmful substances," Senator Grisanti, Chairman of the Environmental Conservation Committee, said. "Our children are the most important parts of a parent's life, parents do all they can to shield and protect them. However, their growing bodies are much more vulnerable to harmful substances.

Senate Passes Klein Bill Toughening Child Pornography Laws

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Thursday, the New York State Senate passed legislation to impose harsher penalties against child pornographers, including increased prison time by way of consecutive sentences, as well as changing punishments from felonies to first degree crimes. The bill also extends protections to all children under the age of 18. Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) is the prime sponsor of the legislation.

The legislation (S2266), would amend current law with the following measures:

1) Ensure that criminals face longer periods in prison when charged with multiple crimes by imposing consecutive sentences;

2) Provide additional protection to minors by increasing the age benchmark of a child from 16 to 18 and;

Senator O'Brien fights to curb texting while driving

FAIRPORT AND EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Today, Senator Ted O’Brien stood with local residents and insurance representatives to promote safe driving through the “X the TXT” initiative, amid recent reports that texting while driving now causes more teen fatalities than drunk driving.

“As a father and a legislator, my top priority is keeping our children safe from harm,” Senator O’Brien said. “Texting while driving is one of the leading easily prevented causes of death among young people today. The ‘X the TXT’ program is a great way to educate our kids about the dangers of texting while driving and help them make good decisions when they’re on the road. Law Uses Latest Technologies to Protect Schoolchildren

Albany, NY - Senator Phil Boyle (R- Bay Shore) has sponsored legislation (S.5028) to keep our children safe when getting on and off of the school bus each day.  The School Bus Safety Act allows school districts and school bus contractors to install school bus safety cameras to capture license plate numbers of vehicles that do not stop when the stop arm of the school bus is extended.
