Merryn says starting when she was six, she was sexually abused by a neighbor, then at 11 by an older cousin.

Senator Gallivan Pressures Assembly Majority To Pass Laura Cummings' Law

In January of last year, Laura Cummings, a developmentally disabled young woman from North Collins, was tragically murdered by her mother. Subsequent information revealed that Laura had been sexually and physically abused by her mother and brother for years. Had New York State Child and Adult Protective Services been given the proper legal tools to conduct an appropriate investigation after several reports of abuse in the Cummings' home, Laura's death could have been prevented. Today I joined my colleagues from Western New York to demand the Assembly take action on this critical measure.

The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.

Senator Peralta Enlists Queens Clergy In Battle Against Domestic Violence

Senator Peralta Launches Faith-Based Initiative to Combat Domestic Violence

As part of his campaign to combat domestic violence, State Senator Jose Peralta enlisted the help of more than 30 Queens clergy, who accepted his call to talk about the problem of family violence with their congregations and to provide referrals to potentially life-saving services.

At a meeting with the clergy at the Langston Hughes Library in East Elmhurst, Senator Peralta asked the clerics to take up the issue during services on the last Sabbath of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
