Stipend College Preparation & Green Job Training Available to NYCHA Residents

Green City Force, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) partner, is now recruiting NYCHA residents to participate in their stipend college preparation and green job training program - the Clean Energy Corps!

School 30 Children Read Over 20,000 Books!

Yesterday morning, School #30 principal Jason Wertz and the rest of the faculty and staff of the school celebrated the success of its children in grades pre-K thru 6 who read 22,000 books from mid-October until mid-December. As past of the event, the students got a visit from the Rochester Fire Department and Principal Wertz was sent to the roof for the children to see! Congratulations to all of the students on this tremendous accomplishment.

Greece Rotary Recognizes Outstanding Youth

Last night, I had the privilege to attend an event where the Greece Rotary recognized outstanding youth in our community. Congratulations to all the young men and women on your distinction and thank you for making contributions to our community. Best wishes and continued success for all you do inside, and outside, of the classroom! School #7 Hosts Faculty/Guest vs. Students Hoops Game

Earlier this morning, I had the privilege to take part in the Virgil I. Grissom School #7 Faculty/Guest vs. Students basketball game. I was joined by New York State Assemblyman Brian Kolb, along with faculty and staff from School #7. Prior to the game, I had the opportunity to meet with students in their classroom, and following the game, I met members of the school's basketball team. Great job by everyone this morning and great school spirit shown by all of the students in attendance!

On Saturday, I had the privilege to take part in the WDKX 103.9 FM Share the Warmth annual holiday event. This event provides children the opportunity to pick up winter coats, gloves, mittens, scarves, and hats that were graciously donated to WDKX. Thank you to all who helped make this event possible!

Senator Serrano Honors USA Men's Olympic Gymnast John Orozco in Proclamation Ceremony

Senator Serrano Joins East Harlem's March for Peace

Senator Serrano joined community groups and local youth today for the March for Peace, a community anti-violence peace march, organized by Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito's El Barrio/East Harlem Youth Violence Task Force. The purpose of the march is to end violence in East Harlem, promoting the slogan of, “Put the Guns Down, Throw the Peace Signs Up.”"Today we are united in  fighting for the safety and quality of life of our community,” said Senator Serrano. "I am proud that we are all coming together to fight against the violence that has been destroying lives for way too long in this community, and we must continue to combat violence in all forms. This march is an empowering step closer to ending the war against gun violence and senseless crime in our community."

North Clinton Annual Tree Lighting

Earlier today, I had the privilege to attend the annual North Clinton Tree Lighting. The event featured a parade, which included Santa Claus and students from Schools Number 9 and 20 in the City of Rochester. The event is sponsored by the North Clinton Business Association, along with support from Albert Algarin.

Senator Kennedy, Naaman Roosevelt Send off Buffalo Youth Headed to National Football Tournament

Players, coaches from Buffalo’s United Youth Football League depart for national tournament in Florida.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Players and coaches from Buffalo’s United Youth Football League departed for their national tournament in Florida Friday from True Bethel Church in Buffalo. Senator Tim Kennedy, Councilman Demone Smith and Naaman Roosevelt, formerly of Buffalo Bills, were there to send off and congratulate the local contingent headed to Florida. Over 100 Buffalo youth are headed to the national championship tournament.

In recent years, teams from Buffalo have done very well at this national tournament, outperforming teams from across the country. League organizers expect no less this year.

Meeting with Boy Scouts from Troop 18

Earlier this afternoon I had the opportunity to meet with a group of boy scouts from Troop 18. The four scouts, who visited my district office, discussed issues regarding our community as they complete the process for their Citizenship Merit Badge. In addition to our community, we also discussed how government operates in New York State and current issues facing our state government.

Section Five Football Semi-Finals

On Sunday, October 28th, I had the privilege to conduct the pre-game coin toss before kickoff of the Section Five Football Semi-Final game between Aquinas and Rush-Henrietta. Congratulations to the Li'L Irish from my alma mater on your 21-13 victory. New York Immigration Coalition & FPA Announce 2013 DREAM Fellowship Program

The New York Immigration Coalition, in partnership with the Fund for Public Advocacy, announced its acceptance of applications for the 2013 DREAM Fellowship Program, a semester-long leadership development program.

The Dream Fellowship Program is a semester-long leadership development program, initiated jointly by the New York Immigration Coalition and the Fund for Public Advocacy. In its first semester in the Spring of 2012, ten college-level DREAM Act eligible student leaders were selected for the fellowship, which included leadership development trainings, internships at community organizations and $2,000 scholarships toward tuition at City University of New York. The Korean American Community Foundation also provided supported for the program.

Community-Wide Collaborative to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse

Earlier today, I had the privilege to speak at a press conference announcing a new community-wide collaborative to prevent child sexual abuse. Bivona Child Advocacy Center, in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Rochester announced today their official collaboration with local nonprofit and government organizations to address the epidemic of child sexual abuse. In addition to Bivona Child Advocacy Center and the YMCA of Greater Rochester, the Darkness to Light Collaborative includes: Center for Youth Services, Heritage Christian Services, Hillside Children's Center, Monroe County Department of Human Services, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children/NY Branch, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester Police Department, Society for the Protection and Care of Children, St.
