Seward Co-Sponsors "College Coaches & Professionals Reporting Act"

ONEONTA, 11/29/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced he is co-sponsoring legislation that will close a loophole in the state’s child abuse reporting requirements.  The “College Coaches and Professionals Reporting Act” adds college coaches, athletic directors, professors, graduate assistants, administrators and college presidents to the list of mandatory reporters of child abuse in New York.

Queens Officials Unveil Tougher Crime Bill

NY1 also wrote on the elected officials' responses to the recent surge of crimes in Astoria, including Senator Gianaris' plans to protect small businesses and organizations from lawsuit should they need to be safe havens for residents who feel they are in danger.

NY1 VIDEO: At an Astoria rally on Thursday, elected officials revealed new crime-fighting legislation that will dole out harsher punishment for sex crimes and not have store owners be liable for injuries that happen while helping a victim seeking shelter.

I spoke with students on the legislative process and duties of me and my colleagues in the State Legislature, along with how they can have their voices heard in our community. Reading to Students at Hilton's Village Elementary School

On Tuesday, November 15th, Senator Robach had the opportunity to visit with second grade students at Hilton's Village Elementary School. To promote literacy and comprehension, Senator Robach read a book chosen by their teacher, Mrs. Root. The students also spoke about books that they are currently writing and what their favorite books are.

SENATOR SALAND ANNOUNCES NEW FACEBOOK APP TRACKS SEX OFFENDERS

Program allows parents to quickly search surroundings for threats to children

State Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) today announced that the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has launched a Sex Offender Locator application which is accessible via the New York State Public Safety Facebook page. The app makes it easier for parents who want to quickly look up information regarding Level 2 and Level 3 Sex Offenders within their immediate area.

New Playground Opens at P.S. 9

PS 9 hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new playground.  What was once a bleak asphalt lot with only a basketball court and broken play gym is now a completely refurbished school yard with a number of brightly colored and stimulating play spaces, from tennis courts to climbing structures.  The playground was built in conjunction with Out2Play and supported by funding from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Department of Education and the Brooklyn Nets Community Alliance.

Senator Adams Encourages Youth at Trinity Baptist Church

Senator Adams was the keynote speaker at the Trinity Baptist Church-GEMS Youth Ministry Awards Dinner in Crown Heights.  The GEMS youth group is involved in several community outreach programs, including "Feeding the Hungry," where meals were given to people in need, and Bible Study sessions at Marcus Garvey Nursing Home. Senator Adams encouraged the youth to continue to succeed and be a positive role model for their peers and their community.

Senator Adams Co-hosts the Kick-off of the "Less Talk ... More Action" Tour

Senator Eric Adams co-hosted the kick-off event of the "Less Talk...More Action" tour, held at Medgar Evers College on October 27th.  Ryan Mack, President of Optimum Capital Management L.L.C. and author of "Living in the Village," launched the 8-city tour which will focus on improving financial literacy rates, reducing unemployment rates and reducing mass incarceration rates in African American communities.

Spooktacular Good Time

The Queens Gazette wrote about the19th annual Children’s Halloween Costume Party, sponsored by the United Community Civic Association (UCCA) and Central Lounge in Astoria Heights. Senator Gianaris, along with other elected officials, was there to celebrate Halloween with over 500 children, friends and parents.

Taking a break from the age-old custom of going doorto door trick or treating on Halloween night, more than 500 youngsters, parents and friends attended the 19th annual Children’s Halloween Costume Party, sponsored by the United Community Civic Association (UCCA) and Central Lounge in Astoria Heights. Central Lounge owner Nick Neocleous, a member of the UCCA board, provided the venue.

Erin Merryn's Law would mandate child sex abuse education

SYRACUSE, N.Y. --"My innocence was killed, my childhood was taken. My voice was silenced. And I lived in that silence," Erin Merryn said.

Merryn says starting when she was six, she was sexually abused by a neighbor, then at 11 by an older cousin.
