Brighton's French Road Elementary School Honored as Blue Ribbon School

On Friday, December 9th, Senator Robach had the privilege to speak at a ceremony at French Road Elementary School in Brighton to celebrate their recognition as a Blue Ribbon School. French Road Elementary School and Pine Brook Elementary School (in Greece) were the only two area schools to win this National award. Congratulations to the students and staff of French Road, and best wishes for continued success!

Senator Dilan Announces Passage of Inner City Youth Employment Program

Brooklyn—State Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) announced the passage of a new Inner City Youth Employment Program and Tax credit initiative for the State of New York.  The new program, created within the legislation adopted during extraordinary session on December 7th,  sets aside $87 million for inner city youth.  The funding is allocated through programs, training funds, and tax credits to deal with the crisis of inner city youth unemployment.

Annual Astoria Toy Drive

The Queens Gazette reported on the Annual Astoria Toy Drive where more than 200 children showed up to meet Santa Claus in addition to enjoying other festivities like karaoke, a magician and delicious cheeseburgers. Senator Gianaris attended this annual event to participate in the holiday festivities. 

The 114th Precinct and 114th Community Council held its annual Christmas party and toy giveaway on December 3 at Riccardo’s by the Bridge in Astoria. More than 200 neighborhood children came to meet Santa Claus at the joyous event that also featured karaoke, a magician and McDonald’s cheeseburgers.

Seward Co-Sponsors "College Coaches & Professionals Reporting Act"

ONEONTA, 11/29/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced he is co-sponsoring legislation that will close a loophole in the state’s child abuse reporting requirements.  The “College Coaches and Professionals Reporting Act” adds college coaches, athletic directors, professors, graduate assistants, administrators and college presidents to the list of mandatory reporters of child abuse in New York.

Queens Officials Unveil Tougher Crime Bill

NY1 also wrote on the elected officials' responses to the recent surge of crimes in Astoria, including Senator Gianaris' plans to protect small businesses and organizations from lawsuit should they need to be safe havens for residents who feel they are in danger.

NY1 VIDEO: At an Astoria rally on Thursday, elected officials revealed new crime-fighting legislation that will dole out harsher punishment for sex crimes and not have store owners be liable for injuries that happen while helping a victim seeking shelter.

To promote literacy and comprehension, Senator Robach read a book chosen by their teacher, Mrs. Root. SENATOR SALAND ANNOUNCES NEW FACEBOOK APP TRACKS SEX OFFENDERS

Program allows parents to quickly search surroundings for threats to children

State Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) today announced that the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has launched a Sex Offender Locator application which is accessible via the New York State Public Safety Facebook page. The app makes it easier for parents who want to quickly look up information regarding Level 2 and Level 3 Sex Offenders within their immediate area.

New Playground Opens at P.S. 9

PS 9 hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new playground.  What was once a bleak asphalt lot with only a basketball court and broken play gym is now a completely refurbished school yard with a number of brightly colored and stimulating play spaces, from tennis courts to climbing structures.  The playground was built in conjunction with Out2Play and supported by funding from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Department of Education and the Brooklyn Nets Community Alliance.
