Senate Passes Renee's Law

The New York State Senate today passed “Renee’s Law,” which would help protect staff of the state’s youth residential programs and ensure appropriate placement of youth based on their criminal history. The bill (S.5565), co-sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C – Olean) and Senator George Maziarz (R,C – Newfane), was prompted by the brutal 2009 murder of Renee Greco committed by youth in her care. Renee Greco was only 24-years-old when she was bludgeoned to death while supervising troubled teenagers at a group home in Lockport, Niagara County.

Senate Passes Concussion Management Awareness Act

The New York State Senate today passed the Concussion Management Awareness Act, sponsored by Senator Kemp Hannon (R, C, I, - Garden City), Chairman of the Senate Health Committee, that would direct the State Health and Education Departments to adopt rules and regulations for the treatment and monitoring of students with mild traumatic brain injuries. “The number of children each year who suffer brain injuries, such as concussions, is alarming,” Senator Hannon said. “New York needs legislation to outline rules and regulations for the treatment and monitoring of students with mild traumatic brain injuries, and that’s exactly what my legislation provides.”

LaValle Launches Summer Reading Program

“Reading is a cornerstone of a solid education,” LaValle said. “My Summer Reading Program will help parents and educators keep children interested in reading while preparing them for the next school year. I urge all children to head down to their local library and pick up a book today and take part in my Summer Reading Program.”

The program is designed for students in Grades 4-6 but is open to any child in the community who enjoys reading.  Complete details are available at the New York State Senate’s summer reading program website at www.nyread.com.

A parent or guardian can register a child. The complete program will be administered online.

RHYBL Celebrates Opening Day 2011

On Saturday, June 4th, I had the honor to participate in Opening Day activities for the Rochester Hispanic Youth Baseball League. The Opening Day ceremony was dedicated to the memory of Staff Sgt. Javier O. Ortiz, who was killed while on active duty as a United State Marine serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Ortiz's children threw out the opening pitch. GOVERNOR CUOMO LAUNCHES SUMMER JOBS EXPRESS TO ENCOURAGE BUSINESSES TO HIRE 16,500 YOUTHS

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the Summer Jobs Express program to encourage business leaders to hire 16,500 youths between the ages of 14 and 21 for summer employment in high-need areas of the state.Summer Jobs Express will provide $21 million in funding to qualifying local organizations and businesses that hire youth for five weeks or more from June 13 through September 30, 2011. Funds will also be used to provide work readiness training, supportive services and wages.

Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) and Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli (R, C – Goldens Bridge)  today helped pass joint resolution K266, honoring the achievements of Jason Distant, the Northern Westchester Boys & Girls Club’s 2011 Youth of the Year. Kirk Road Elementary Kids Raise Funds for Anna's Wish
