Senate Passes Legislation to Go After Child Sex-Abusers

Griffo-Sponsored Harsher Penalty Bill for Child Sex-Abusers Passes Senate

 (Albany) – State Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-C-IP, Rome) reported that the New York State Senate today passed legislation to strengthen the penalties for those adults who are convicted of the sexual abuse of a child.

Senate bill 1882 amends current criminal provisions to allow for a person to be found guilty of sexual abuse in the 1st degree when the abuser is at least twenty-one years old and the victim is less than thirteen years old.

IDC Discovers Spike in Overtime/ Worker's Comp Costs at Office of Children and Family Services

The Office of Children and Family Services has increased overtime costs and experienced a drastic spike in worker's compensation claims, according to a report released today by the Independent Democratic Conference.

These startling numbers come as the overall number of youths under OCFS supervision has actually decreased from 983 during this beginning of the 2009-2010 fiscal year, to roughly 700 currently.

Maplewood YMCA Unveils Expansion, Renovations

On Monday, January 17th, the Maplewood YMCA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of renovations which totaled $5 million dollars, which added 16,000 square feet of space. Klein is calling on Craigslist and other websites to put a stop to the illegal sale of Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages (CABs) on their websites.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

(Albany, NY) Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District - D/WF) announced that the Child Health Plus and School Meals Enrollment Coordination Act (S4057B) has been signed into law by Governor David Paterson. This legislation, introduced by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins will assist the approximately 220,000 children in New York State who are currently uninsured, but are eligible for Medicaid or Child Health Plus. Since the majority of children who are not participating in Child Health Plus are attending school and qualify for the Free and Reduced Price School Meals Program, this law coordinates the sharing of information to better serve our State's children.

Liz Krueger's Education Forum

In an effort to bring together different stakeholders in our State’s educational system, Senator Liz Krueger hosted an Education Forum to explore how we can improve upon our educational system, with a particular focus on the role of teachers and testing. This was also an opportunity for the State to come to the district and discuss how an economic downturn is an opportunity to plan for the future of education in New York State. Dr. David Steiner, New York State’s Commissioner of Education,  delivered a keynote address entitled “What is an Educated Citizen” and a panel included Clara Hemphill and Dr. Stephan F. Brumberg.
