Senator Klein Fights To Help Save Money That Supports Deaf, Blind and Physically Disabled Schools

BRONX, NY –  State Senator Jeff Klein (D- Bronx/ Westchester) joined concerned students, parents and educators during an Albany rally to save the funding for schools that serve deaf, blind and physically disabled students. 

The Bronx  is home to three of these schools otherwise known as 4201 schools -  Lavelle School for the Blind, St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf and New York Institute for Special Education.

Greece Athena Middle School Director Honored Before Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

On Friday, March 4th, Greece Athena Middle School opened up its production of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'. Prior to the first show of the weekend, Senator Robach presented a certificate to Artistic Director Carl Wager. Wager is retiring after a 39-year career of a teacher and director. 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' continues Friday March 11th at 7:30 and Saturday March 12th at 2:00 and 7:30 at the Greece Athena Performing Arts Center.

79th Annual Aquinas Institute Mission Bouts

Senator Robach was in attendance at the 79th Annual Mission Bouts in the Wegman-Napier Gymnasium at the Aquinas Institute.

 

Congratulations to the boxers who trained rigorously for months with Coach Dominic Arioli and his long-time assistants Chris Schwab, Lou Buscemi & Bernie Barco.

 

This year, the Bouts were dedicated to Dominic Arioli, in honor of his 30th anniversary as a coach. As a 1973 alumnus of Aquinas, Dom has dedicated much of his life to fostering the program that he grew to love as a student. Dominic's devotion, understanding, commitment and ability not only to teach, but to relate to our young people have endeared him in the hearts of all the young men and women who have climbed through the ropes of the Aquinas boxing ring.

Juvenile Justice Reform: A Call To Action

 

 

 

Facing a system in crisis and an economy on the brink of collapse, Senate Democrats joined with child advocates and clergy to announce their support for Gov. Cuomo’s plans to reform the broken juvenile justice system, and call on Senate Republicans to drop their political demands that stand in the way of needed reform. Led by Senator Velmanette Montgomery, ranking member on the Senate’s Children and Families Services Committee, Senate Democrats sought to build on proposals included in Gov. Cuomo’s 2011-12 Executive Budget by announcing additional policy initiatives to create greater oversight and cost savings for New York taxpayers.

Senate Passes Legislation to Go After Child Sex-Abusers

Griffo-Sponsored Harsher Penalty Bill for Child Sex-Abusers Passes Senate

 (Albany) – State Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-C-IP, Rome) reported that the New York State Senate today passed legislation to strengthen the penalties for those adults who are convicted of the sexual abuse of a child.

Senate bill 1882 amends current criminal provisions to allow for a person to be found guilty of sexual abuse in the 1st degree when the abuser is at least twenty-one years old and the victim is less than thirteen years old.

IDC Discovers Spike in Overtime/ Worker's Comp Costs at Office of Children and Family Services

The Office of Children and Family Services has increased overtime costs and experienced a drastic spike in worker's compensation claims, according to a report released today by the Independent Democratic Conference.

These startling numbers come as the overall number of youths under OCFS supervision has actually decreased from 983 during this beginning of the 2009-2010 fiscal year, to roughly 700 currently.
