Yesterday, the NYS Conference of Black Senators (CBS) unveiled their 2010 Signature Agenda issues and expressed their concerns regarding these particular bills not being brought to the Senate floor for a vote. Members of CBS truly believe that African American Communities have suffered long enough within the areas of Economic Development, Education, Health, Housing, Environment, Crime, Racism and Discrimination.

Additional Education Aid for Pre-kindergarten Advances in Senate

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins announced that legislation she introduced in the Senate, S7190, to provide additional aid to the Yonkers City School District, passed this week out of the Local Government Committee. The Yonkers City School District has a fully implemented Universal Pre-kindergarten Program in its schools that has served as a model for other districts and has had a significant positive impact on improving student performance in the region.

(Albany, NY) The Senate Democratic Majority passed legislation (S2233-A/Montgomery) which will reform foster care agencies’ current policy of instantly terminating parental rights – of specifically mothers – who are incarcerated, allowing them to clean up their act and retain rightful custody of their children.

Young People Display Creative Genius at Invention Convention 2010

            Rochester, NY— On Saturday, May 15 from 12:30pm to 4pm, budding inventors will display models of their bright ideas for the Rochester Region–Finger Lakes judging of Invention Convention 2010.  The event will take place in the lobby of the Rochester Museum & Science Center Strasenburgh Planetarium, and the public is invited to meet the inventors and share the excitement. Admission is free.

As the school year draws to a close, students naturally turn their thoughts to summer vacation and time away from books! It is important, though, to keep school age children in the mindset of learning. For this reason, the New York State Senate has partnered with the New York State Library to offer you the 2010 Summer Reading Program, a fun and exciting way to keep students in the fourth through sixth grades reading while on break through the summer months. This year's theme is "Make a Splash...Read!"

Griffo Unveils Anti-Bullying Bills For Child Safety

(Albany) – Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-IP-C)  today joined members of the Senate Republican Conference in announcing the introduction of a legislative slate of bills targeted to prevent bullying, cyber-bullying and hazing among New York schoolchildren. 

Senator Griffo is co-sponsoring a legislative package which would also prohibit any type of bullying on school property or school functions, increase the penalties for hazing, and establish a statewide central registry for reporting bullying, cyber-bullying and hazing complaints.

Sen. Foley Leads Community Effort to Clean up Graffiti in Brentwood

Joined by volunteers from all walks of life in Brentwood, State Senator Brian X. Foley led the effort to clean up graffiti from public and private property in the neighborhood. Senator Foley’s office worked with a local civic group, Brentwood Residents Against Violence Every Day (BRAVE), to organize the start of a concerted effort to rid the community of graffiti.
