Call for NYS Liquor Authority to investigate harsher penalities for local retailers

 WESTCHESTER, NY – Deputy Majority Leader and State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined Tuckahoe Mayor John Fitzpatrick, Bronxville Mayor Mary Marvin, Tuckahoe Police Chief John Costanzo, Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale and James Genova, Project Director of Eastchester Communities that Care Thursday to unveil the most recent results of an ongoing undercover investigation and crackdown into the illegal sale of alcoholic caffeinated beverages such as FOUR LOKO and JOOSE  to area teens. The lawmakers also called on the SLA to investigate alcoholic beverages being marketed and sold to underage drinkers in New York State.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Encourages Parents to Read Aloud to Their Children to Prepare Them for School

As thoughts turn from summer vacations to back-to-school preparations, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) reminded parents that reading aloud to their young kids is one of the best ways to prepare them for the challenges of a new school year.  Senator Oppenheimer, who chairs the Senate Education Committee, recently participated in an early literacy awareness event at the Open Door Family Medical Center in Ossining.  

Reading the popular children’s book, “Five Little Monkeys” by Eileen Christelow, the Senator captivated her young audience, who joined in with the refrain “No more monkeys jumping on the bed!”  The children and their parents were at the Open Door Family Medical Center for pediatric check-ups.

“Promotion of the Italian language in the US; ITALIAN REGENTS RALLY AND HERITAGE CELEBRATION”

State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), State Senator Diane Savino (D-Staten Island) and representatives from the Westchester Italian Cultural Center and the Sons of Italy announced the restoration of the NYS Italian Regents high school exam at a rally on Thursday. Last week the NYS Senate saved the exam from extinction when it passed the final piece of this year’s budget. Attendees rallied in support of this important achievement and to celebrate Italian culture.

Senator Dilan-Sponsored Measure “Elle’s Law” Signed Into Law

Increases Penalties on Reckless Drivers Who Injure PedestriansLegislation closing a long-time legal gap that allowed for reckless drivers who injure pedestrians to escape prosecution was signed into law last week.Elle’s Law, sponsored by Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Brooklyn), Chair of Senate Transportation Committee, amends New York State’s Vehicle and Traffic Law to enact tougher penalties on motorists who blatantly disregard the vehicle and traffic code’s “rules of the road,”  and injure pedestrians as a result of dangerous and unlawful driving.

Senator Diane J. Savino Sponsors Free Back to School Giveaway

(Staten Island, NY) In order to prepare parents and students for the start of a new academic year, Senator Diane J. Savino will sponsor a “Back to School Blast”, where parents and students will receive free school supplies, free health screenings, giveaways, safety tips and college-related information. Kids will also be treated to healthy snacks, games and other activities. Representatives from city and state local agencies, including the NYC Public Library System, the FDNY, Project Hospitality, Boy Scouts of America, Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Health Center will also be present. The event is co-sponsored Richmond County Savings Foundation, One Way Youth of First Central Baptist Church and the Downtown Staten Island Council.

Anthony Barnes' Hurricanes squad has become farm team for Staten Island high schools

It was the summer of 2003, and Samuel Barnes' music career was reaching new heights.

But the move left Barnes in a crossroads of another kind. It was supposed to be the second season for his Staten Island Hurricanes youth football program, which he'd just started the year before.

6/23/2010: "Dignity For All Students Act"

(Albany, NY) The Senate Democratic Majority announced and celebrated the passage of the landmark ‘Dignity for All Students Act’ (S. 1987B) today at 11:30 AM.

The most comprehensive legislation against harassment in schools to date, the ‘Dignity for All Students Act’ will help reduce the incidences on bullying amongst New York’s youth. This legislation had been stalled in the Senate for several years prior to Democratic leadership.
