Senator Kennedy Announces Legislation to Increase Mandated Abuse Reporters Working in Schools

State Senate passes bill that Senator Kennedy cosponsored to expand and clarify school officials required to report suspected child abuse by designating school coaches as mandated reporters.

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senator Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, announced the New York State Senate passed legislation to increase the ranks of mandated reporters working in schools across the state. The legislation, which Senator Kennedy cosponsored, will expand and clarify the school officials required to report suspected child abuse by designating school coaches as mandated reporters.

Albany, NY) - State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) joined Senator Jose Peralta and his other colleagues in government in co-sponsoring the DREAM Act, which he hopes will finally get passed during this year's legislative session.The DREAM Act creates a path towards citizenship for undocumented students who have entered the U.S. before the age of 16 and have lived here for five consecutive years since their arrival. They must also have graduated from an American high school, obtained a GED or have been admitted to an institution of higher education.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senator Tim Kennedy and Assemblyman Sean Ryan today announced state funding to support major renovation plans for the Butler-Mitchell Boys and Girls Club, which is an important yet aging community asset on Buffalo’s West Side. Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo officials outlined their plans to improve the Butler-Mitchell Clubhouse and broaden its impact in the neighborhood. Kennedy said this major reconstruction project will help strengthen the West Side community and support families who call the neighborhood home.

Sen. Parker Advocates for NYC DOE to Reverse its Decision to Close Fahari Academy Charter School

In a letter to New York City Department of Education Chancellor Carmen Farina, Senator Kevin Parker requested the Brooklyn charter school be given additional time to demonstrate and build upon its success. Despite strong community and elected official support, this past November the NYC DOE made the ill-advised decision not to renew the charter for Fahari Academy School, co-located at Walt Whitman Middle School in Flatbush.

Senator Klein, Assemblyman Crespo and Bronx Community Leaders Call for Official Recognition of African Slave Burial Ground at Drake Park

BRONX, NY– Standing in front of the south side of Joseph Rodman Drake Park in Hunts Point, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), local elected officials and Bronx community leaders called for official recognition of an African Slave Burial Ground discovered last year. Evidence of the Burial Ground site was discovered last year by a group of students at P.S. 48, led by Teacher-Historian, Philip Panaritis at the south side of Drake Park.
