Governor Cuomo's 2012 Executive Budget and Reform Plan Outlines Vision to Continue Building a New New York

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today unveiled his 2012-13 Executive Budget and Reform Plan, which expands on the historic reforms enacted last year to continue building a New New York. As a result of the tough decisions and bipartisan cooperation of the past year, the State is able to close the current deficit without broad cuts, new taxes, fees or gimmicks. In addition, the Governor’s Executive Budget proposes major reforms to reduce the cost of government for taxpayers, implements accountability in our schools to put students first, and puts the State in a position to leverage billions of dollars in private sector investment to grow the economy and create jobs.

Associated Press wrote about Senator Gianaris' and Senator Schumer's are call for an investigation of the alleged strip-searching incidents by TSA agents at JFK Airport. They are also calling for a designated Passenger Advocate at all airports.Huffington Post picked up on the story:

Two New York lawmakers have called for a passenger advocate at airports to immediately act on complaints by passengers over security screenings.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and state Sen. Michael Gianaris of Queens want the Transportation Security Administration to create the position at all airports.

Senate Task Force On Government Efficiency To Investigate Bureaucracy

State Senator Patty Ritchie announced that she was named to a bipartisan legislative panel investigating waste and inefficiency in New York State government.

Senator Ritchie’s appointment to the Senate Task Force on Government Efficiency was made official by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.

“Making government operate more efficiently means lower costs for overburdened state taxpayers, a better economic climate for our state, and an invitation for businesses to create new jobs,” Senator Ritchie said.

Bedbugs found in Astoria school

Queens Chronicle wrote about Senator Gianaris'  Bed Bug Notification Bill, passed last year, a measure to prevent incidents such as the one that occurred at P.S. 70.

Bedbugs have infested PS 70, an elementary school in Astoria, according to reports published last week, which said the school has the worst bedbug problem in the city.

The Department of Education discovered the infestation last December, including evidence the bugs were breeding, but never told anyone at the school about it.

For the first time, the DOE has admitted the problem came from within the school itself. In the past, the department has claimed bedbugs were brought into schools by students.

Residents and area politicians are incensed with the agency’s oversight.

Bedbugs Ignored In Local School

Queens Gazette wrote about the bed bug infestation in P.S. 70.Children must be able to learn in an environment that is not hindered by bedbug infestations.

Parents and elected officials are furious at Astoria’s P.S. 70 for failing to notify them of a bedbug infestation that has been ignored since last winter.

An inspection was performed at the school in December, in which several bedbugs were found in one of the school’s closets with signs of breeding. No notification was given to the parents, students or teachers. Even Principal Donna Gellar was left in the dark; she was unaware an investigation took place to begin with.
