GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES 2012 STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS TO BE HELD IN EMPIRE STATE PLAZA CONVENTION CENTER ON JAN. 4

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the 2012 State of the State Address will be held in the Empire State Plaza Convention Center on January 4th at 1:30 pm.

"The State of the State Address is an opportunity to open the doors of government to New Yorkers and bring the people into the process of rebuilding our state," Governor Cuomo said. "Holding the State of the State in the Empire State Plaza Convention Center will allow hundreds of New Yorkers from across this state to come to Albany to be a part of this day. I look forward to joining with members of the Legislature and the public on January 4 as we begin the new legislative session and continue the work we began last year to transform our government and build a New New York."

STATEMENT FROM STATE SENATOR MICHAEL GIANARIS ON AGREEMENT TO REBUILD ST. NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH

“For more than a decade, Greek-Americans have been without our place of worship in one of the most significant locations in this country. This long-awaited deal reminds the world of New York’s emphasis on religious freedom and the value of reconstruction as we continue to remember all we lost on September 11th. I look forward to celebrating the rebuilding of Saint Nicholas with my fellow Greek-Americans and all New Yorkers. I thank the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Governor Cuomo and the Port Authority for their hard work to bring about today’s agreement.”

Queens Gazette: GIANARIS PRAISES NEW ETHICS LAW

Queens Gazaette wrote about Senator Gianaris' support for the new ethics legislation that Governor Cuomo signed into law.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law last week the new Public Integrity Act of 2011, drawing heavy praise from state Senator Michael Gianaris (D–Astoria), who was strongly in favor of the new ethics reform statute as it made its way toward passage in the senate during the regular senate session earlier this year.

The law increases transparency, Gianaris noted, establishes more stringent disclosure requirements, and creates a new independent ethics panel to oversee elected officials.

They're in the Back Room

New York Times editorialized the need for the Governor to veto any legislative district lines not drawn in a bipartisan manner. We need to create an independent redistricting commission now.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York has taken a strong stand against gerrymandering. He put forward a good bill that would create an independent commission to draw political districts and promised to veto any new maps that are “partisan.” Albany’s pols are not giving up.

Mr. Cuomo’s bill went nowhere, despite the fact that a hefty majority of legislators signed a pledge in 2010 to support such a commission. The old-style task force is now drawing up maps, and the business-as-usual crowd is trying to figure out how to get around the veto threat.
