Senate Passes Term Limits for State Legislative Leadership

The New York State Senate today passed legislation that would set into law eight-year term limits for leadership positions in the Senate and Assembly. The measure (S2722B), sponsored by Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-C-I, Rome), is consistent with what is already in place in Senate rules and also limits the number of consecutive years a legislator can serve as a committee chair or party leader.

IDC still powerful in the Senate: Avella

When state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) first joined the Independent Democratic Conference, a group of rogue Democrats in the state Senate, he praised the group for its ability to overcome partisan lines and get things done.

Now that Republicans have the majority in the upper chamber of the state Senate, he concedes “the jury might still be out” on whether the IDC remains relevant.

But he insists that the group is still relevant, saying that it continues to have a working relationship with the Republican conference and still has influence.

Gov. Cuomo: No Ethics Reform, No Budget

The downfall of State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has led to a call for new reforms in state government, a campaign that could lead to a budget impasse. As Bill Carey reports, lawmakers believe they can avoid a budget stalemate by reaching a deal with the governor before the April 1 deadline.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has been on the road to warn that timely budgets are less important than a trustworthy government in Albany.

State Senate Coalition urges Assembly to pass companion legislation to key Senate bills that strengthen protections for children against sex offenders

Albany, NY –  The New York State Senate Coalition today unveiled a new alarming joint-investigative report, “Keeping Our Children Safe From Sex Offenders, Special Report: Westchester & Rockland Counties,” conducted by the offices of State Senate Coalition Co-Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and State Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Nassau), which uncovered sex offenders living dangerously close to preschools in Westchester and Rockland.

ALBANY, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and members of the Independent Democratic Conference released a New Deal for New York report with detailed new job creation projections on Thursday. The New Deal for New York  plan was immediately met with praise from leaders and non-profit executives as the wisest way for New York State to invest $5 billion in financial settlements. The IDC predicts the creation of  more than 130,000 good-paying new jobs through its plan.

City of Niagara Falls Left Out of County Casino Revenue Equation; Ortt Says State Law Pertains to All Municipalities

A dozen organizations throughout Niagara County received a portion of casino revenue Tuesday night. The Niagara County Legislature decided that money will be used for community development projects. The City of Niagara Falls, however, was left out of the equation, because it already receives funds from the Seneca Niagara Casino. Senator Robert Ortt was asked what he thought about the Legislature excluding Niagara Falls. Ortt said state law does not forbid the county from sending casino cash to the Falls, but the county can divvy it up in a way it sees fit.

Senator Jeff Klein's Session Remarks on Senate Bill S.0851

Senator Klein’s legislation (S.851-2015) prohibits level two and level three sex offenders from being housed in family shelters and requires by law that they be placed in adult-only shelters or shelters without children.
