SENATOR AVELLA AND IDC LEADER KLEIN JOIN ELECTED OFFICIALS AND COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS TO COMMEND REJECTION OF PAN AM PROPOSAL

(QUEENS, NY) Today, State Senator Tony Avella and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeff Klein joined elected officials and community activists to praise the rejection of the Pan Am shelter proposal.

The proposal, returned by the Office of the Comptroller for concerns about health, safety, and fire code violations, has now been rejected for the second time in two months. The decision came just two days after Senator Avella, IDC Leader Klein, and other elected officials and community activists held a press conference to call for the contract’s rejection.

     At this time of year I think back to the last few weeks of school as they wound down to just days and those days finally turned into minutes. We’d watch that clock on the wall as it ticked off the moments until summer and truth be told, it seemed impossible to concentrate on getting any work done. As kids, we were absolutely certain this time was meant to be like a landing strip, with schoolwork gently tapering off to ease us gracefully into the joys summer…And if you had teachers like mine, you were rudely awakened.

Call on the Assembly to Pass Companion  Legislation to Senator Klein’s Bill Requiring a Public Forum Prior to Shelter Siting

(QUEENS, NY) Today, State Senator Tony Avella and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeff Klein joined elected officials and community activists to call for the rejection of the Samaritan Village proposal to convert the illegal Pan Am shelter into a permanent shelter. They urged the Assembly to pass companion legislation to Senator Klein’s bill that would require that a public community forum is held prior to the approval of a shelter site.

“Frankie Flora’s Law” Would Require Owners to Pay Medical Bills of VictimsQueens, NY (June 16, 2015): NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. recently joined at a State Capitol press conference with Frankie Flora – an 11-year-old boy who was badly mauled by a pit bull in 2009 – to call for the passage of his legislation (S.2494/A.6210) which would hold dog owners legally accountable if their animals seriously injure other people or pets.  Specifically, owners would be required to pay the medical bills of both human and companion animal victims of dog bites, even if it is a first incident.

State Senate Passes Klein & Savino Bills to Combat Predatory Auto Lending Practices in New York State

Albany, NY— Independent Democratic Conference Leader State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and State Senator Diane Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) announced Tuesday that the State Senate passed two critical pieces of legislation they sponsor aimed at  predatory subprime auto lending in New York.

Senator Klein’s bill (S.5485A) increases required surety bonds used car dealerships must hold as a consumer protection from $10,000 to $100,000 if the used car dealership sells more than 50 cars annually. Smaller used car dealers can take out $20,000 bonds if they sell fewer than 50 vehicles a year.
